It’s 8 best of 20 now since GHIN started, so really it represents the best you can play.

I have been commenting on the golf creators' channels, specially on GoodGood Golf, that the guys should all get official handicaps. Not only would it make it more fair when they are playing against others in individual competitions, but it would allow us followers to see how say Steve's game is improving, but it will also allow us to compare our own game to that of the creators...maybe spread the word please

I have been trying to explain this to people for years. Thank you.

Not an average at all. Handicap index is a measure of potential based on past/recent scores

It’s not calculated by par it’s done by course rating. So if par is 72 but course rating on a hard course is 76 handicap is done off that so +1 would be shooting 75 which is 3 over par.

I don’t give a hoot what you are, or what your score is. You sure have helped me and I re-watch your stuff all the time. Your video on long irons and how to pure them is the best video for this topic on YouTube. Thanks for all your help, keep your chin up.

Also, your are mathmatecally only supposed to play to your hdcp 1/5 rounds. 4/5 you will play worse than your hdcp.
Hdcp is only a measure of “potential”. I am a 3 hdcp and my avg score last yr was 78.9. So 7 over, not 3 over.

😂😂 Telling a fish how to walk 😂😂😂😂 That was great

It’s not just that it’s your best 8 out of 20. On a course with a reasonably high SLOPE your score difference can be like 3 less than your score. Because actually it’s your average out of best 8 score difference. Your handicap is usually 7 or 8 strokes less than your average score

One of the most misunderstood thing in golf is the handicap index. Most believe it’s close to what you score on average which is far from the truth. The higher your handicap the further from your average round it’s likely to be

I get that until someone tells me they are a scratch golfer then shoots 88

I think it’s you telling a fish how to swim!! What type of metaphor was that Mr. Short ?

Only problem that the guys i see on the course that claim to be scratch never seem to shoot under par. Apparently they are amazing when they play alone

The fundamental problem is that it should be an exponential scale not a linear one.

As you go from 18 -> 0 making a net birdie becomes harder, because in general making a natural par is several times easier than making a natural birdie.

So the handicap system assumes that it requires the same improvement in skill, to go from 18 to 16 handicap, as it is to go from 2 to 0, just 2 shots. We know statistically that this is untrue.

When you start with a system that is mathematically flawed, and does not reflect reality, you cant expect it to work.

The current system essentially means that the better you get the harder it is to win. This inaccuracy also makes the system far easier to exploit

Thanks, just watched a 6 minute video that coudln't explain it's simply the best of your last 10 games as an average.

Really to truely understand the current handicapping system, one has to look at, think about and understand the 2 mathematical formulas for calculating
(a) Handicap index
(b) Daily handicap
They are not simple concepts, so (without wanting to appear smart) it is understandable that they are not well understood. Most people just aren't wired that way.
And even knowing the above is only the start. There is a plethora of other handicapping rules which also need to be applied.
The only fortunate thing is that all the calculations are done by computer systems, based on a simple input of golf round scores.
I'd venture to say that even the majority of people who hold the position of Handicapper at their golf club have only a rudimentary understanding of the system - because that's all they need.

Knowing how it works versus actually carrying the correct hcp are two different things

Wait. A scratch golfer does not shoot par on average. It’s what he shoots on a good day, or to be specific, it is the average of his best 8 rounds out of 20. So a scratch golfer shoots even par maybe one time in 10-15 rounds.
