Effects... finding the balance is key!

Manipulating the sound of the music during a set can be a great way to add energy, tension, and a unique touch to your mixing. However, like with many things, the phrase 'less is more' is also something to consider when using effects.

We've all been there. You're waiting around for the next transition, so you fill the time by jumping to the effects channel. This is fine as long as it's a considered approach. Are you just filling your own time and keeping busy, or are you elevating the set?

Using too many effects can overcrowd an already busy mix or transition, so next time you're mid-set and feel like reaching for that trusty echo, roll or reverb, just remember this analogy and highlight the key moments!

Imho, the only place (and still not with every track) where a minimal 3/4 echo or a slight reverb almost always works is to enhance a buildup and move the sound away from the audience before smacking it back into their face on the drop.
