Bavaria: tradition in danger | DW Documentary

Günther Hochhäuser is a passionate marksman who fights to maintain the traditions of his homeland, Upper Bavaria.

The Christian Social Union, who has been in power here for decades, could get a drubbing in upcoming elections -- to Hochhäuser’s dismay. Marksmen's clubs stand for everything Bavaria is famous for: folk costumes, cultural lore and tradition. Their chairmen include illustrious public figures, such as former Pope Benedict and Prince Max, Duke in Bavaria. Marksman Günther Hochhäuser says "We are a pillar of strength." But that pillar looks to be on increasingly shaky ground. Bavaria and even the seemingly timeless Inn-Chiemgau shooting club are being overtaken by the tides of change. Until recently, voting for the conservative CSU party was a given. But recent polls say that the CSU will suffer big losses in the upcoming state elections. Many Bavarians are angry that German interior minister Horst Seehofer, a member of the CSU, recently came close to bringing down the country's governing coalition. Axel Rowohlt reports.

Even though most of my German family is from the former German state of Prussia; I still love the culture and tradition of bavaria, it needs to be preserved.

It is a beautiful thing that such organizations do. I especially appreciated the catholic language used.

This honestly feels like a sensationalistic hit piece, missrepresenting these marksmen. Tradition isnt somehow inherently dangerous or problematic.

I‘ve been learning German for almost a couple of years, and am from Texas, and I’ve heard that Bavaria is the Texas of Germany, and I see why, so it delights me to see Bavarians so proud of their heritage and culture, and wanting to protect it, just like us in Texas! Alles gute meine Brüder und Schwestern!

Good on them for keeping their traditions and values forefront. As the gentlemen states, weapons are not what's needed to keep out the foreign invaders (money changers, swindlers, agents of a foreign power) from infiltrating German banks, real estate markets, industry, political networks, etc. Communication, vetting of people, and holding them accountable is key. The marksmanship award adornment looks like pure silver, would love to see it up close, I wonder how old it dates back?

All over Europe traditions are extinct. This is because today generations kinda forget what history, culture, education, religion, respect, or duty means. People do not want to fight for their country, people do not want to read a book, learn, and follow a tradition. I do not even talk about religion. NOPE. people want money, houses, cars, clothes, a circus, and having fun. Free sex, free credit, free behaviour...who cares about the duty to serve their country, who cares about preserving traditions? Or even get a real strong education....Nope...This is because somebody wants people to be dum and superficial and unable to think and ask good questions.

we in Bavaria like our traditions! We have got 3 tribes in our country! Bavarians, Frankonians and Schwaben! We stand for our values, everybody who accepts them is wellcome! It is very easy to get in contact, for example Oktoberfest: "Millions of visitors visit our capitaltown of Munich and have fun together, with traditional music and lifestyle" it has been allready copied in other countries like Australia or China, so why should we stop what we are! This what you see is not a fake, here in Bavaria is the real live style like we are!
