Colonizing Mars might be the best chance to ensure the human species survival in the future. In order to adapt to Mar’s hostile living conditions, our bodies will evolve in ways that might end up with a completely new species of human.

Science Insider tells you all you need to know about science: space, medicine, biotech, physiology, and more.

That's cool we would have another skin color to criticize.

I wonder what we would become if we lived in sky cities on Venus.

This video assumes that we'll chunk a group of people to Mars and then have zero interaction with them for hundreds to thousands of years. Speciation occurs when two populations are presented with a barrier to interbreeding and are allowed to develop separately over a long period of time. Odds are, that if we have a thriving colony on Mars, that there will be people coming back and forth and interbreeding between Martians and Earthers long before genetic drift takes the Marsenites to the point that mating is impossible.

Odds are, people on Mars will be perpetually miserable because they'll keep getting injections of Earth genes which are made for Earth living. Unless they could rapidly genetically engineer themselves or find a technological means of overcoming the differences between the planets, then there will always be a struggle to survive on that planet.

Also: You forgot to talk about that we would probably have much bigger lungs because there's much less oxygen on Mars.

I wonder how many carrots I'll have to eat to have the same skin color as Trump...

Or we could build protection from radiation before we decide to live there, plus space suits would contribute to a larger weight anyway. Also, there wouldn’t be speciation if we kept going back and forth between the two, which is most likely.

"might have opposite reaction giving us more robust bodies". I am thinking like how? Less resistance will result weaker bodies. The logical approach to settling mars is terraforming.

With the possibility of Gene modding we could make ourselves very adaptable

We’ll be just as disgusting as we’ve been acting on Earth, except we’ll have a cool new red background

Hopefully we can colonize Mars, that would be amazing!

We came from Mars a very long time ago and our space vessel killed the dinosaurs

Those giants in Prometheus might become reality in the future. Damn. I wish I could live long enough to see that evolution

Everyone is excitedly talking about Mars colonization, but there is so little conversation about what that might do to our bodies. We are so perfectly evolved for Earth's conditions, but Mars would be dramatically different. I'm nervous and fascinated to see how the first Mars-born human will differ from us if we ever make it to that point.

I dont think it would change that drastically. If they manage to build a biodome to filter out the radiation and make the dosage similar to earth, it would take way longer to evolve. The gravity will be the biggest factor. You have to remember new humans would still be coming from earth to live there, and just coming for a visit as well and Martians would go live on/visit Earth.

I don’t think it’d ever be anything too drastic because of common interbreeding between earth and mars people, but I like to think slight modifications can be seen in certain people there and on earth. Like slightly taller and orangish colored skin with bigger eyes.

If I could, I’d travel 5, 000 years into the future to see all of this. I imagine by that point, the earth would probably be a little different due to the effects of nuclear and radioactive waste created by humans from thousands of years before.

Everyone has tunnel-vision for Mars, but Venus would actually be a much more suitable second-home (after a full terraform).

What about terra form mars. Creating more oxigen by melting the polar caps or introduced a. Meteors with water. To provide full planet changes

What if our species will slowly evolve as we travel and spread our species planet by planet until we reach to the point where we evolve with six arms or alien-like feature such as large head and big eyes?
