Just a few short moths before his resignation, I saw original Vatican photograps of the audience which Pope Benedict granted to my local bishop. They were of exceptional quality and showed just how frail the then Pope was. Everyone who saw them thought the same.

When the resignation announcement came, it was not a complete shock.

Seriously, how can you pressure anyone into anything by shutting down Vatican ATM machines? Vatican city is tiny, the nearest Italian ATM machine is just a few hundred meters walk away. It is not like the only ATM in a Nebraska backwater shut down, this is right in the heart of a big city. There are plenty ATM's around the Vatican that provide currency that is valid in the Vatican. I have been there.

I am a Benedict man. I really would have liked him to go on longer, especially if that would result in a better successor than we have today. But I do understand his resignation. Not everyone is a John Paul II. And the simple fact that some people don't like the present Pope, doesn't make him invalid.
