Understanding Ethics
January 19, 2014
What are we doing when we engage in ethical discourse–that is, when we think, talk, or disagree about what we ought to do? What, if anything, are our ethical judgments about? Upon entertaining such questions, it’s alarmingly easy to arrive at the conclusion that our ethical practices rest on a mistake or illusion. This lecture explores some of the arguments and theories developed by contemporary philosophers in their efforts to avoid this depressing conclusion.
