Just Some Election Thoughts...

I recorded this video last night, so it is already a little out of date. For example, Joe Biden is almost certain to be the next president of the United States.

I'm sorry if this video is a bit more somber and less hopeful than I should properly be, Montana's elections did not go well, so I'm feeling that. But a Biden / Harris presidency is vital...it was hard fought and it's going to make the world a VERY different place than it otherwise would have been. I am so grateful to every person who participated to make this change happen. I am in their debt, and so is the whole damn world.

i pray that after this election is over, everyone CONTINUES to PAY ATTENTION to what's happening in their government. the struggle isn't over after a new guy sits down in the white house. your values aren't realized after a new guy sits down in the white house. all the problems that got trump elected don't magically disappear when a new guy sits down in the white house.

stayed tuned in. keep your government accountable. don't forget how we got here, how many hundreds of thousands of corpses are at the feet of BOTH parties, how much corrupt money circulates through BOTH parties, and why people who are out there hurting voted the way that they did.

As a fellow Floridian, watching FL turn red was very hard, particularly since the the votes and cities/areas with large universities were overwhelmed by the collective votes of the rural areas. My county was one of the first to be called and I was so happy to see my county flip to blue, to see that my vote mattered in some way, and having that get ripped away as I was reminded I live in a state of backwards people was really hard for me.

One of the most comforting things I heard on Tuesday was " no matter which one wins, nothing big is going to change automatically." It seems like something that could cause dread but in the moment, my friend really helped ease my nerves.

As a Dutch guy who has lived in the US from age 3-8... A lot of Americans have no idea how strong the bubble is in which they live. Just check the news outlets and the papers on how much foreign news is there. Staying in touch with the world around you gives you perspective. This can really help when it comes to the self-reflection that, may I suggest, *could* be extremely helpful in healing your country. ;)

This election I, as a high school senior, volunteered to be a student poll worker and it was actually a very rewarding experience. I got to interact with so many wonderful people, especially the other poll workers. As cheesy as it sounds it felt patriotic to see democracy in action.

You and John played a vital role in understanding and overcoming how I was raised and what I believe to become not just a progressive democrat, but one who donated, campaigned for democrats (including Deb Andraca who flipped a WI seat for the first time in YEARS) and started to understand the world differently after being raised and roundly believing in deeply conservative beliefs. The world isn't the way we thought it would be, I hope some day it'll be better because of people like you.
