VK 540 Primer Cold Starting

Adding a plunger style primer greatly improves cold starting performance.

I have installed the primer with the help of this video - excellent help with cold starts. I have had terrible fouling issues with both starting and idling my 2017 VK540 - best solution so far was to put a hotter plug an "8" rather than a "9" NGK. Idles without fouling now, and starts / warms easier. Another trick it is when you know it has fouled while idling - just give it a touch of throttle to rev it a little and it will clean out fairly quickly. When plugs do foul badly - use a good propane mag-torch ( kept under your seat)to heat the end cherry-red and it will burn out all of the carbon completely. Good luck! Otherwise, great machine!

Yesterday -32C here in ontario.My VK was dead.Would not start.Actually left it home and took my tundra 300.2019 VK 540.I'm installing a primer kit, That was frustrating.Nice install, thanks.

I thought I figured my VK out. Put a new coil on it and it ran great. Both plugs firing. I went for wood this morning, it was good. Went back for second load made it 3 miles and it bogged right out. Made it too across the Peel from my house and it seized solid.

Another thing that seemed to help was putting a heater on it from 1/2 hour then starting it using the primer only. Save the plugs.

My dad used to add primers to all of his VKs. Especially the ones he used to break and mark the trail for the Iron dog. It definitely works well.

Primer kits does Yamaha do it ? And how much cranking amps do you have for your snow mobile? Thanks

man that seems to pull a lot easier than mine unless you are some kind of body builder. ya have any history of fouling plugs with that machine?

Why did you not put the tee in the existing splice connection above the point where you tied in? I am in the process of installing one. Is it because the tee would not fit?

I drilled a tiny hole in the plastic air intake breather,
Which I can re-cover with a piece of electrical tape,
A touch ( ( one second spray) of quick start,
And I’m running....
