It was the same day (26.12.2004) when my parents were there in kaniyakumari enjoying their days. Just half an hour before the tsunami hit my father's close friend has called him to have lunch with them but my dad denied. But due to the compulsion they took off from kaniyakumari to his friend's place in Nagercoil. When they switched on the tv they got to know there was a tsunami. Till now my parents are thankful for his friend in one way or the other since if he had not called my parents i will not be in this world now to tell this backstory.

Worst part is it happened on a Sunday morning. Sunday is when the beach is busiest with morning walkers, children playing etc. So tragic it was.

My boss had gone to Sri Lanka to spend Christmas with his family. I remember being terrified and hoping he was ok. That night I got a phonecall from him to say he had been on the inside of the island, basically opposite Tamil Nadu, and that he and his family were ok. I have never been so happy to hear from any boss as I was to hear from him lol.

Always Andaman is forgotten, we have also suffered same as everyone, our islands broke into pieces, people died swept away, bodies everywhere, towns washed away and water never retreated and created massive tidal pools. The plate shift is seen very clearly here.

I was working as a sub editor in a newspaper in 2004. Our correspondents started sharing the pictures. Just seeing them shook me to the core. We were instructed not to print any disturbing pictures. For me going through the whole reel to select a few less disturbing pictures was horrible.

One common theme I’ve noticed about these Tsunami videos especially this one and the one that hit Japan is some people are in awe of the immense power from the tsunami until they freeze up in one spot and stare. It’s almost as if they are in a trance. RIP to all the people that have lost their lives in natural events like this.

I was in pondy, 14 year old, cycled to the beach road after hearing something strange was happening at the beach. Saw the ocean 50 to 100meters behind where it stood my whole life... and saw men running towards the sea to catch dying fish lying on the sea bed. I went inside the city to call my friend and when i returned the water was 30 meters inside land. Couldnt beleive rocks were lying on the road and knew how strong that wave must have been. Next 6 hours i spent watching all the coastal areas in pondy, and how affected it was. People evacuating their homes with their few precious things.

26th december was such a day in Kanniyakumari. Being the southern most tip of Mainland India it was alwayz a buzzling tourist spot for both Inland and International visitors. And it was also the day of famous "Suchindram temple festival" where people used to visit the beach by the go to spend their time. My parents said that they too planned to visit Kanniyakumari after temple and called off by the relatives and other people's quarrels and helicopters and Rescue vehicles marching towards the beach. They initially thought and said that the beach went inside the sea and reappeared as big waves hitting the shore

In that 16k deaths, over 97% death recorded in a single state of India, which is Tamil Nadu, as well as Andaman and Nicobar islands till now it's a terrifying experience.... whenever me and my cousins eagerly ask my parents or uncle to accompany us to shore in Muttom, first there will be a severe restrictions, because of the impact this tsunami has created and took a life of a relative from our family in 2004.

So many videos/documentaries of this tsunami only brush over its impact on India and/or only focus on foreign tourists in Thailand and Sri Lanka so I appreciate this video. One of the problems in not just India but all the countries affected was a startling lack of knowledge about tsunamis. So much so that when the water receded people went to check out the shore instead of running away. I guess the only silver lining of this tragedy was the wake up call it gave to both people and governments of the devastating nature of tsunamis.

Such a heartbreaking and terrifying disaster. If one good thing has come out of both this Boxing Day tsunami and the 3/11/11 Japanese tsunami, it is that people worldwide, especially those living in high risk areas, have become keenly aware of the signs of a tsunami. Also, many countries now have tsunami warnings and signs leading people away from possible catastrophe. The education was made possible by a world of people with mobile devices who survived and later shared their stunning videos. Thank you so much for this enlightening video. May those who lost their lives in both of these tsunamis Rest In Peace, and May their loved ones and survivors find strength in their memories of happier times.

I was in Port Blair, Andaman when this tsumani happened. I remember running to a open ground when the earthquake hit. When there is an earthquake its hard to even stand and walk on the ground. The ground will be literally shaking and tossing you off. I escaped from the tsunami as I was staying on a hill side and it was a nicely elevated area. Still we went around later and show the damage caused by the tsunami over there. A large cargo ship was sitting on a hill side which was next to the docks.

My friend's dad was in Kanyakumari on the day the waters retreated suddenly...and many knew something was very wrong & wisely retreated away from the spot quickly... but stupidly some people encouraged their families to go further towards the bare beach to take pictures despite warnings from others. Then they saw the ultimate catastrophe of nature's impact...
