Even if the referendum is voted yes to annex those areas, the international community won't recognize it... Just like Crimea, although sham annexed as well, isn't recognized. Crimea is still recognized as part of Ukraine to the whole world except Russia.

Once those regions are annexed they will make an excuse to go nuclear... NATO needs to respond in a forceful way. In order for peace in Ukraine and the world there must be a major war effort to get rid of a regime who is already drafting 300K of fighting age men. The regime might even recruit another 300K more to fight.

The referendum in Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, and Zapirozhzhia, were rigged as voters were coerced into voting to join Russia, and the voters were spied on during the vote, meaning that if they voted against joining Russia, they would face severe punishment.

Ukrainian military will still fight to liberate Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson, Zapirozhzhia, and eventually the Crimean Peninsula from Russian regular regardless of threats.

The irony is that even some of Russia's allies are turning their back on them, including Kazakhstan.

Russia would be wise not to attack the Kazakhs as China will get involve and easily crush the Russian forces.
