What makes this different from Iraq is that Saddam was the US' dog, so no one complained when it put him down when he slipped his leash.

What makes this different from Afghanistan was that the Taliban had no important friends. The closest thing to an ally they had was Pakistan, which is a client state of the US.

But Syria's Assad does not owe his power to the US and has friends that do not answer to it, which means that none of them are likely to back down in the face of US provocation.

Not only that, the US military is starved for manpower, given current military commitments. We aren't going to see "boots on the ground" in Syria, but even an air campaign will end badly for US prestige.
