Richard Strauss - "Andante, teneramente", from Five Piano Pieces op. 3
Alex Alguacil, piano. Live at Palau de la Música Catalana.

This is the first piece of Fünf Klavierstücke, op. 3 (1880-81) a group of five pieces in a romantic style, influenced by Schumann and Mendelssohn. The melody of the beginning - two ascending notes at an octave distance followed by three descending notes - is a motif that will appear in the other four pieces, either literally or transformed, thus giving certain unity to the whole composition. This little motive will be used by Strauss in later works, for example in Death and Transfiguration, expressing a sort of nostalgic memory or romantic longing.

Very Schumannesque; a beautifully tender love and expression

Thank you for posting this. Beautiful playing. This is the first time I hear this miniature. My exposure to Strauss' piano output was limited to Burlesque until this moment :)
