FYI: In May of 2017 the permafrost around the entrance melted and flooded part of the vault. This was never even contemplated in its design. Fortunately, an alert staff turned on pumps and refrigeration and no seeds were damaged. However, this was never supposed to happen! We really are screwed!

Ironically the permafrost melted the year this was published, 2016, and meltwater rushed into the vault. Now they're rebuilding. Not as safe as they thought it was.
