Why Don't Chinese People Smell Bad? (They Don't Use Deodorant!)

Hey Laowinners!

Chinese people, and asians in general don't have typical body odor. This is due to a gene that doesn't allow them to produce a bad smell. My Chinese wife and I talk about why this is, and what Chinese people do to avoid getting it. Also, we talk about why there is a lack of deodorant in China.

A moment of silence for those who were eating while watching earwax images.

As a South Asian, I will say what you can not. We can REALLY stink sometimes. A combination between sweat, excess hair, and preparing foods that are heavy in garlic and onions means we can smell a lot!. Although South Asians that are more conscious of our smell such as myself take a lot of measures to minimize the stink. From shaving all excess hairs (everywhere...) to installing ventilation systems in our homes for cooking to buying expensive scents such as musk to mitigate the stink. Some of us care!

We had a Chinese guy working for my shop here in the states who always smelled horrible. We didnt want to embarrass him because we liked this guy but we talked to him about it and he said it was probably his diet. He did do something about it and never an issue with it again. Great guy.

Damn, I wish I had that no-odor gene! Sounds so useful!

When I was in Taiwan for the first time many years ago, I noticed that people there didn't have body odor. I'm a Caucasian American, and while I tend to be on the lower side (and have dry earwax that I have to moisten to remove), I still need to use antiperspirants. After a couple weeks or so there, I noticed that i needed it less and less, but I'm not sure if it had to do with the foods I was eating, or that I essentially removed the bacteria during showering, and there were fewer "sources" around to cause "re-infection" or a combination of both. // I have a girlfriend from the Philippines who is ethnically half-Chinese (and many Filipinos ignore her because they think she's Chinese)--she has no underarm hair and uses no antiperspirant or deodorant and doesn't smell. // Of course the truth is, we ALL smell--and that's because we have noses! If anyone reading this DOESN'T smell, go and get tested for COVID.

On thing that was lacking from the charts shown in this video is that South Asians--a group often reputed to have body odor--were not represented. Otherwise, it was very interesting.

ive dated 3 chinese girls and they all had bad hygiene. one never brushed her teeth (rarely brushed), one's crouch smelled all the time (lack of showering properly), and one's smells bad at all the time. these were the reasons that I ended relationships.

I'm a Polish, Russian and Jewish American and I sweat like crazy and would stink to high heaven if not for bodywash, water and deodorant. My partner is Japanese American and never has worn deodorant in his life....I feel your pain Matt....

My Dad has this gene (he's european), I've never seen him use deodorant in his life and even if he worked in the summer heat in the garden for hours, he just didn't smell of sweat under his armpits. Unfortunately I didn't inherit it from him. So fascinating!

I find it fascinating when a single gene has multiple effects you would think are unrelated (like earwax and armpit odor). Another one of my favorites is that some people have a gene that makes broccoli taste absolutely revolting (they taste something extra in it), but if they drink orange juice after brushing their teeth, they won't be able to taste the weird taste the rest of us do.

I remember my first time running out of deodorant in China. I went to the nearest convenient store and was surprised to find that there was no deodorant to be found. I figured it must just be too small of a store to carry deodorant. I then went to a giant Dennis and spent hours looking for a stick. Still no luck. I spent the next week checking every store I went to and never found any deodorant!! I finally realized it's just not a thing in China. However I finally found a cheap knock-off version of a deodorant-like substance. Needless to say, I brought an endless supply back to China with me after I visited the states. Never want my pits to smell like they did that week again!

I seen that graph about the people who have bad body odor. I'm native American and I don't need to use deodorant. I think the odor has something to do with the person's diet too.

I think you are right. My wife is from Korea and I have never detected any odor from her. Of course, it is rare to see a Korean sweat. I on the other hand sweat profusely. A few years ago when visiting my wife's family we were walking up this trail with some of them. It was warm and sunny and I started sweating. They though that I was sick and that there was something wrong with me.

Oh thank you! I have been telling folks neither my wife or her relatives in China have body odor. Now I know why! Very I was not crazy!

well this was VERY informative and helpful to me for two reasons: 1. I'm writing an in depth observation piece for my college art appreciation class on something we have notice and must describe as vivid as possible in detail of an object we've never notice closely before. my subjects are identical twin Chinese women whom I'm also doing a compare and contrast, so your video was a big help. 2. it explains to me WHY my ex-Asian gf never really smelled at all, and why she ALWAYS smelled good, compared to previous gfs i've had before. and all my other Asian friends who are Chinese, Japanese, Hawaiian, & Vietnamese. keep up the good work & I always recommend your videos (and your wife's videos) to other people.
