I'm from Florida and I remember the day of the Parkland shooting. I was in 8th grade and I remember being in history class. Everyone was talking about who's is who's Valentine's, only for our teacher to start acting weird. He was preventing us from being on our phones when usually he didn't care if it was a holiday, and then the announcement went off. Our Principal begins to tell us what happened, as much as she respectfully and appropriately could to a bunch of 12-14 year olds. We had a moment of silence, everyone was very reserved and teachers couldn't teach at all with questions from a few students about the situation. I remember asking my teacher if he knew how many kids died, and he couldn't look down at me into my eyes and tell me the truth. For the rest of the year, our whole school and from what I remember, other schools as well, went through partial-lockdown. It didn't take a month for all the copycats came out and thus started the serial epidemic of school shootings. Drills for ''Dangerous People In The Area'' turned into ''Shooter Drill'' for the rest of my public school years. Since then, I and my fellow classmates have had to deal with trauma inducing days because someone decided to make a gun or bomb treat. We'd go on lockdown, active if the person who made the treat showed up, and many would flinch at any loud noise as we hid. These scared us so bad because sometimes they were drills. They wouldn't tell us, and sometimes wouldn't tell the teacher/sub, on purpose. I remember 10th grade we had another unexpected code red drill (shooter) during gym. We had a poor twenty something as our sub, who didn't know that sometimes teachers weren't informed, and it was her first time doing a code red as a teacher and not a student. She had a breakdown and went manic getting all of us to the most secluded parts of the gym. She shoved us in and made us lock ourselves in the supply closets and handed us the key to all the doors. She made the boys grab anything they could to barricade the door while she locked it and turned off the lights. She then just completely collapsed and broke down. A lot of students had to comfort her and then called for help once it was a confirmed drill. Even on regular days, I still fling at any sound that sounds like it can be gun shot. I can never fully relax in public, not just cause I'm a woman, but because I know at any moment someone can just snap, and I can just happen to be around when it happens. I get anxiety if at events I'm not able to secure a seat facing the entrance or if theres too many people sitting behind me. I can't use normal alarms, as it sounds similar to the alarm that went off they day someone finally brought a gun to school and I was on the same floor as the potential school shooter. Luckily they got him before he could do anything, but ever since then I can only use jingles for alarms unless I want to wake up in panic. It's Florida so of course at times there's actual gunshots happening, and its inevitable to hear it, but I notice when it happens all the younger people instantly duck down while significantly older may have a slight reaction but move on. We need to continue the fight for gun control in the United. States. Not doing so is practically spitting on the graves of all the young souls and dedicated teachers we lost because of gun violence . We need better regulations on how easily attainable it is to purchase and own a gun. And WHO is mentally stable enough to do so. We NEED to raise the age of requirement. There's is absolutely no need for an 18 year old to be able to purchase and own a firearm if they're not in the military. Sorry for rant, but seeing the Parkland shooting being mentioned here just brought back many memories of what growing up was like because of the domino effect that happened after his actions that day. School shooting have always existed beforehand ofc, I acknowledge that and my prayers go out to those victims families. But I think we can all agree, that Parkland was what really started the epidemic i mentioned earlier. Again sorry for rant.
