Lesson 64: Understand LLDP | Configuration

Here is yet another video of our Free CCNA Course series! In this video, we will learn in detail about the concept of LLDP. Lets’ get started -

What is LLDP (Link Layer Discovery Protocol)?
Link Layer Discovery Protocol (LLDP) is a protocol used to generate information about media endpoint devices, including what network policies are available for media applications like voice and video, troubleshooting, and device location. While LLDP and Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) are quite similar protocols, LLDP enables vendor interoperability while CDP is specifically Cisco.
Through LLDP, devices can advertise their configuration, identity, and capabilities to neighboring devices, which store the information in a Management Information Base. In addition to helping speed up the process of adding a device to the Local Area Network, neighbors can share the details that are necessary to troubleshoot many configuration problems.

Configuring LLDP using the same topology used in the case of CDP

Just follow the steps and commands given below to configure LLDP:

Step 1: LLDP is similar to CDP but by default, it is disabled, and to enable it we use the command ‘lldp run’ in the CLI of Switch.
Now, the LLDP is enabled, and to see the LLDP information use the command ‘lldp neighbors’ and you’ll see that the Device ID is Switch2, Local Interface is Fas1/0/22 & Fas1/0/21, Hold Time is 120 seconds, Capability is B, and Port ID is Fas1/0/22 & Fas1/0/21.
Step 2: You can see more information on a per-port basis also using the command ‘lldp neighbors fastethernet 1/0/22’ in the CLI of Switch1.

Do we need LLDP on Cisco devices?
Up to the time, you are connecting the Cisco device with a Cisco device so there is no need for LLDP, but as soon as in your network you are migrating to new vendors or new devices where you are connecting Cisco to some other vendors so you need their LLDP.
So, in this video, we have discussed what LLDP is and how we can use it in Cisco Platform scenarios.
Hope now you have a crystal clear understanding of LLDP; if not, then write your doubts in the comment section below and we will resolve it.
