AP HEIMLER REVIEW GUIDE (formerly known as the Ultimate Review Packet):

Instagram: @heimlers_history

In this video Heimler takes you through Unit 7 Topic 4 of the AP U.S. History curriculum which is set in period 7 (1898-1945).

The Progressive Era was essentially a reaction against the laissez-faire policies of the Gilded Age. Prior to the Progressive Era, the government was largely hands off with respect to business and social reform, but the Progressives believed that the best way to cure societal ills was with the intervention of a vigorous government.

Progressives sought to correct all manner of societal abuses such as disputes between labor and capital, abuse of alcohol, women's suffrage, Jim Crow segregation in the South, and many others.

Through their efforts they were able to get three constitutional amendments passed: the 17th amendment (direct election of senators), the 18th amendment (Prohibition), and the 19th amendment (women's suffrage).

All the content in this video corresponds to Unit 7 Topic 4 of the AP U.S. History Curriculum (CED) and all the key concepts thereunto appertaining.

Last year you helped me to get a 4 on the AP World exam. This year, I decided to switch back to regents history so I could focus on my AP Bio class but... after being in AP World, regents USH is a culture shock. I truly don't feel like I'm learning enough history, and the history we do learn is quickly reviewed and not *used* as it was in AP. But in the words of Mark Twain, "I have never let my schooling interfere with my education". So, I'll still be using your videos to learn American history the same way I did for World history. Thank you for making consistently interesting, humorous, and insightful videos for everybody to learn from. :)

Notes

1. progressives didn’t all agree on one most important clause, but all agreed that government intervention was necessary

2. “The Jungle” by a muckracker about disgusting stuff in the meat industry. Many journalists shine light on corruption for exposure in hopes to make change

3. Wanted to put more voting power in people’s hands, Australian Ballot. (Try to stop political machines). Wanted direct election of senators (17th amendment)

4. Initiative requires legislators to consider a bill that they chose to ignore, referendum for ppl to vote themself. Recall: recall people. People’s powers back.

5. Taylor’s: Scientific management: increase productivity

6. Niagara movement: Stop lynching and stop segregation, etc. NAACP: same + education

7. Distinguished between good and back trusts (Roosevelt). Passed laws for meat and meds etc. Reserved acres of land
