In this video Heimler takes you through Unit 6 Topic 4 of the AP U.S. History curriculum which is set in period 6 (1865-1898).

In the years after the Civil War, some southerners pushed for an industrialization of the South since in many ways it was the industrial capability of the North that paved the way for victory in the war. In some isolated regions, this vision of the New South took hold, but in large measure, the Southern economy remained agricultural, mostly running on the labor of sharecroppers.

After the Compromise of 1877, segregation in the South was upheld in the Supreme Court decision in Plessy v Ferguson. The results of this decision meant that southern society deeply segregated itself into separate but (not) equal segments.

If you have any questions, leave them below and Heimler shall answer forthwithly.

This video is aligned with the AP U.S. History Curriculum and Exam Description for Unit 6 Topic 4, and all the key concepts thereunto appertaining.

What were the various factors that contributed to the continuity and change in the New South?
- Henry Grady coined the phrase New South
○ Saw the North was more advanced industrial wise
○ Wanted South to become more industrial focused
○ Southern states surpassed or equaled the North in industry
- Sharecropping
○ People who did not have enough capital to buy their own land worked on the land of plantation owner as long as they gave the owners some of their profits
○ New form of slavery
- Compromise of 1877 ended reconstruction and removed federal troops that made sure amendments and laws were upheld
○ Once they left, segregation began
○ Plessy Vs Ferguson - part black man refused to sit in black railroad car
○ Supreme court ruled that racial segregation was constitutional
○ Separate but equal was okay according to the court
○ Jim Crow laws made every public facility segregated
○ Black people loss many of the gains of reconstruction
§ Forbidden to serve in office
§ Could be convicted of a crime without a trial
§ Lynching
○ Significant resistance
§ Ida B Wells wrote newspaper that was anti-lynching. Fled to north after death threats and her press was destroyed
§ Henry Turner founded International Migration Society which helped blacks go to Africa. However it was not sustainable.
§ Booker T Washington - felt black people should not fight for equality on a political level, instead they should gain power economically.

Ouch! The term "the Blacks" is not good. Black people, Black folks, Black Americans, all okay according to what people of color have generally expressed, but not "the Blacks." For point of comparison, when we are talking about White folks today, are we more likely to say, "the Whites" or White people?
