You forgot to mention that American military used standard poodles for military and guard work. They stopped because they require regular clipping to keep them well maintained in a utility cut. Also, the AKC grooming requirements was actually developed for utility as well. They left the hair on the chest, head, hips and ankle joints to protect the dog from effects of cold water when there retrieving the birds and the ball on the tall is so they could easily locate the dog while it was in the water. Everything else was shaved of to reduce drag in the water.

I had a standard for 16 years. Best dog I've ever owned. Also, the smartest dog I've ever owned. I still miss him almost every day.

My best friend died a year ago. He was a Standard Poodle and lived with my sister.
He lived to be 15, which is old for a large dog.
Best. Friend. Ever.

Poodles are great. They have such funny personalities. And if they're completely overgrown, they're just so cuddly.

I've had several poodles both toy and miniature. Our last miniature was the size of a small standard. Kasey Kahne was probably the smartest dog I have ever seen. Really a small person covered in fur. He knew the name of every toy (he had close to 50) and would bring you which ever one we asked. He could do all kinds of tricks. He would pray to the Lord, he could even talk. If he was in his cage he would say "me out ". He could say I love you ❤️. We had him for 16 years. I miss him every day 😪

My grandfather used to have a poodle as his gun dog when we would go duck hunting every season. She was a fantastic dog and absolutely blew the Labradors out of the water.

Best hiking dog I ever knew was a standard. We used to go out into the Northern Manitoba bush all day and that dog never tired, and was GREAT at telling me that maybe there was a bear in that direction and we should go a different way.

I had a toy poodle, let me tell you he definitely had a personality of his own. We always called him an old man, even when he was a puppy. He liked a total of 5 people in his 13 years of life. My dad, my husband, my youngest sister, my baby nephew, and me. Anyone else he didnt want anything to do with. And if anyone not on that list, tryed to even so much as touched me, my little guy, his entire 8 pounds would act like he was an 100 pound attack dog. He was one of the greatest dogs i have ever had. I miss him every day.

i have a miniature poodle. she's eleven years old (a little old lady) and now she mostly sleeps near whoever she decided to follow that day, but every now and then the spirit of a puppy possesses her and she starts running around like crazy. She also loves going up and down the stairs for literally no reason

One of my favorite memories is meeting a man and his little white poodle who had matching Mohawks.

As someone who owned a miniature poodle for 15 years cause my mom is allergic to to dogs so we got a none shedding dog..
she was amazingly sweet and eager to please! I taught her all sorts of tricks and she lived on the farm where we would trek through the Australian bush for hours! All the way up till she was 15 she would go on long walks with me of four hours sometimes when we were enjoying ourselves. Was great at recall and loved all people. And all people loved her. Even those who said they hated poodles I was able to show their good side if you put in the time and effort to train them.

They are the second most intelligent breed but because they are not as hyper as the border collie they are easier for training as a first time dog owner. They also are extremely friendly making her able to learn tricks on praise alone and not needing treats to be willing to do as asked as she simply enjoyed being with me and making me happy.
Couldn’t have asked for a better dog and I miss her immensely.
Yes I never got the poodle cut cause I too am not a fan.

Toy poodles are the best. I have two. I’ll never not have toy poodles in my life. Extremely loving breed.

I have a standard poodle, as I have dog allergy issues. She has been claimed by the groomer and vet to be one of the sweetest dogs ever. She has a very sweet and friendly temperament, and pretty smart. And no stupid cuts, she gets clipped short all over, her legs shaved in Summer to cut down on the foxtails clinging, and just a bit of fluff on the top of her head and tip of her tail, but otherwise short all over.
