Been using menstrual cup since last 5 cycles. I use a size as per my age and need. It's completely hassle free, but I remember to sterilize it whenever I get it removed during my menses. No rashes, no odour, environmentally best suited. I now feel like I have taken a very brave and educated step for my ecosystem. But before buying a menstrual cup, remember to do thorough market survey as the cup should be as per your age and volume of blood flow. Start by watching some videos on Sirona cup( not promoting it though. Just saying that its widely available option in India for menstrual cups)

Good video but just some sad facts that came to mind while watching this:

According to the last National Family Health Survey, India has seen an increase in the percentage of women using ANY SANITARY PRODUCT during menstrual and following basic menstrual hygiene, and the figure is still less than 70% in many states.
To put things into perspective- till 5 years ago, majority of menstruating women in India did not use commercially available sanitary products- including pads.

So the question of making an informed decision about what kind of product to use is still such a far fetched concept in a country where millions of women are not even able to do the bare minimum in terms of menstrual hygiene

Even though commercially available pads are doing disasters for the environment, they should be a viable choice for women (esp rural) in India because the first step for them is SAFE menstrual practices

The lack of proper toilets, water supply and privacy is an issue that even urban women might face, which further emphasises the hardships rural women go through

Urban women, who can choose to use menstrual cups instead of pads, have other issues like the stigma attached to shoving things into their vaginas and the general inconvenience of cleaning out the cup in public toilets

This brings me to the point that while caring for the environment should be the number one priority for every decent human being, the onus in this case should ideally be on the companies making these products and the governments regulating them

Everything in public discourse related to menstruation just goes to show how apathetic the government, capitalists and scientific community has been towards menstruating women

Not nearly enough research has been done to create more comfortable products or develop medication/therapies to make it easier on women, period products are taxed as if buying them is a choice and not a necessity (despite tax cuts, even the cheapest products are unaffordable for majority of women) and companies market products that are actually harmful or absolutely unnecessary under the guise of feminine hygiene

Before environment becomes a factor, these things NEED to be considered and addressed

Having said this, women like me who come from privilege must do everything they can
I personally have been using menstrual cups for a very long time
But I would never look down upon any woman who chooses not to because it would be unfair to blame the victims of the malicious institutions in place, and not the institutions themselves

I have been using it for 3 years, if muscles are contracted it's a difficult job. otherwise it's exciting to use it. one should carry pads in emergency along with cup. always buy a good quality cup and please everyone write review of product after one year, 2 year experience because my cup broke 3months back. so it's easy to choose which cup to buy .
