In this video, we trace the origins and history of the 3-3-5 defense ran by Defensive Coordinator Tony White' with the Syracuse Orange football program. We'll see how this defense had its origin in the creative defenses that Joe Lee Dunn ran at New Mexico in the 1980's, how Dunn developed those defenses into the 3-3-5, and how White's mentor Rocky Long took over those ideas and developed them at schools like Oregon State, UCLA, New Mexico, and San Diego State. We'll also see what makes this version of 3-3-5 defense different from the one run by Jon Heacock with the Iowa State Cyclones.

Anyone else a Nebraska fan who came to this video to see an in-depth look at who Tony White is?

This is an excellent breakdown and I look forward to Tony White bringing the 3-3-5 to Nebraska. But I still think Nebraska should try to run the 3-4-5 as often as they can get away with it. Because, let's face it, my Huskers need all the help they can get.

Love the deep dive. Played in a 3-3-5 in college. You hit it spot on this defense was made to attack pro style offenses. I had a lot of fun/freedom in this defense.

Great breakdown!! Excited to see all the situational possibilities tweaked to our players! This, I feel is why Butler came back and probably has Nelson frothing at the mouth! Perfect D for Fiest too!

Awesome breakdown. Played for Coach Long at SDSU so know it well. Great job of explaining a complicated and extremely fun system.

Awesome football lesson again. The historic framework is gives the necessary depth to understand what’s going on. Your breakdowns that in the progression and evolution of schemes. So much more than 11v11 !!!

Side note: Do you expect and or foresee any changes to the schemes or play calling for Cal on both sides of the ball ?

Off the cuff question… why is JW hanging on to BM ? Why doesn’t BM call every game similar to the last big game … the players looked as if the strings holding them back were cut loose

Love the video coach, someone linked it on Reddit when someone asked for differences between Heacock’s 3-3 and this defense. I’d love to see a breakdown of Dave Aranda’s tite 3-4 if you haven’t already

Great Video! You will have a ton of Nebraska people on this video. Can you help me understand how this defensive scheme is different (if at all) than the one Bo Pellini ran while at Nebraska? Seems VERY similar. Base Nickel...a lobo (he called it a Peso at nebraska) Bo ran a 2 gap defensive front with 4 down "most" of time. But often had someone else come up in run support.

Ok let's see what this man brings to the table. A littler nervous about the running game against this defense though 🤔

Can you do jimbo and the Texas A&M offense. Seems like if that kind of offense can get a great qb they always score very easily.

WVU used the 335 for years to blitz and it worked great. Then Rich Rod took it to Ann Arbor and it stunk. Guess we'll see...

Are you a consultant for these teams? what's your backround?

Syracuse loses a Rocky Long disciple and replaces him with Rocky Long himself. Gotta love it.
