For people that don’t know about the European dialects and accents,

Not only every region in Italy has a different accent, but every town has a different accent. A lot of the time it’s difficult to understand what the other is saying but it has gotten a lot easier because Italy has adopted/adapted to just Italian the way it it is written. Sicily is the hardest to understand, even for Italians because of it hard accent and the vocabulary is different.

My take on the diversity in accents even from all the small town towns in Abruzzo where I’m from is that back in the old days there were almost no modes of transportation except for donkeys or mules which were primarily used for farming.
My family included. So the language never got developed and “each town” spoke they way their parents did, and grandparents, and with each generation it continued.
This is true for each town, and there are thousands. It’s also true for all of Europe. Spain, France, they all have the same defect if you will. 😂
With the increased modes of travel, first came trains, then motorcycles and cars, and eventually buses, and planes, the merging of all the accents became more apparent that the Italian language is to become prevalent in each region, and then throughout the whole country.
Accents like the one this man has still holds, same as my accent in Abruzzo, but we can understand each other h other for the most part…..Sicily not so much 😂

As for example, I live here in the USA, when go back, I’ll say words that haven’t been heard in DECADES, and my family and friends laugh because it’s old fashioned abruzzese dialect.
Sometimes they get rude and suggest I learn Italian 😂😂😂
I love my old abruzzese dialect.
Family and friends closer to my age still do speak like I do but with a modern Italian twist.
That old accent still holds though.
Northern Italy has always been more industrialized and the Italian language has held strong. The older dialects are spoken as you travel south.
You know you’ve reached Sicily when you don’t understand anything anymore.
But Italy is beautiful from top to bottom. The same goes for all of Europe.

Sorry if this was long winded.
Thought it might be interesting and informative.
