That’s a powerful message! I never knew all of that about Zacchaeus, and who of us could ever be perfect enough to enter the Temple of God? I hadn’t thought about the perfection requirements as pointing out the enormity of what Jesus did for us on the cross so we could have a relationship with God, but the people in Jesus’s time would have understood. Then seeing others through Jesus’s eyes takes on a whole new dimension, and a new need to make amends for hurts and pain I’ve caused before I focus on pain others have caused me.

I ask for the willingness to see with new relational eyes, to recognize where I have caused harm, and to respond with the same readiness Zacchaeus had, to surrender fully, without hesitation. Give me the courage to take ownership, the humility to seek reconciliation, and trust in Your redemptive power. Fill me with grace so I approach this step not with fear but with hope, knowing You walk with me. Open doors for healing, soften hearts and guide my words as I seek to make amends. May this process draw me closer to You and reflect Your love to those I have impacted.

This step is complete humility, forgiveness and freedom. It’s amazing the step not only sets us free, but it also sets the people that we make immense free as well and brings an unconditional love into the relationship. Thank you, John. 🙏🏾🥰☝🏽😇

I remember that song and the movements that went along with it to keep us wee little folks in Sunday School busy while learning about Jesus. Still learning🙌🏻

Thank you Mr. Ortberg! I upset a friend yesterday and she told me it was "not much sense having a conversation". I used what I learned from you this morning and we are talking again better than ever! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

What a moving fact of Christ's itinerant life, where He is plucking rotten fruit off a Sycamore tree...Or a conker, if you like.,
Indeed, The wee man Zacchaeus ., is dining with the Ultimate Reader of mind and hearts of the sinners.
What a transition...His conceit and arrogance is severely deflated and he is making amends..
Brilliant narration of an episode, that I have read several times, But today, I understand the depth of the meaning in it...
Sheer Brilliance to expound the hidden gem, John, Thank you, so much for today's moral.
Greetings and blessings to your ministry and the colleagues..
Kind Regards, Arnold....(Still in Igloo, with 4 degrees of wind chill factor and teeth chattering..That's Old Blighty AKA Grosse Bretagne for you.)...
🙂🙏✍💅💐

The key is to make amends to “the person you would like to be dead.” Yes, that is who I make amends to because there is a hole in my soul with resentment. But before I can do that, I must forgive and the hole begins to heal. Imagine the line of people at the booth wait to get 1/2 of his wealth and x4 of what he had take from them. Who is healed, the forgiven or the forgiver? I'm betting Zaccheaus walk away dancing. The list is just that, a list made in step 4. Pray over that list before making the amends so you are healed. Thank you, John. I'm just adding my 2 cents!

I've never understood the math of Zaccheus' finances. Presumably most or all of the wealth he had accumulated was ill-gotten. And he probably spent a good chunk of it on himself before he ever met Jesus. But even without that, how could he give away half, and *then* return 400% to those he wronged? I have always wondered about this.

Is this Step program similar to Celebrate Recovery? My church does something similar. It is an international Christian support program for all types of addictions

Good teaching. However, you really didn't need to include any commentary on a certain billionaire. It has nothing to do with this teaching. You could have simply referred to the fact that many people have strong feelings about our tax system, as did the people back in Zacchaeus' day. You're better than that. Try to remember your mission-- and don't go into creating further division by making snarky comments like that.
