For this tree and stump removal, we started with topping the tree. We left the stump on the taller side, so we can get the benefit of leverage. With the aid of some snatch blocks and the Wyeth-Scott Winch we were able to pull down the stump.

Sawzall is a good way to cut roots instead of chainsaw. Use a Diablo pruning blade. It can sink into dirt without worrying about dulling the blade much.
