The Asian Influence On Hip Hop Culture

In honor of AAPI Heritage month, we wanted to pay homage to our Asian brothers and sisters for their influence on Hip Hop Culture. The Black and Asian communities have always had a symbiotic relationship dating back to Bruce Lee and the Wutang Clan. Seeing as how Hip Hop is the ultimate pathway for solidarity building, it comes as no surprise that Black and Asian people can practice Peace, Love, Unity, and Having Fun through their mutual love for the Culture.
.
Shoutout to @unlearntheworld and @texturecentric for producing this dope Hip Hop content, and @lgapangwa for always filming amazing videos for us!

Myself n my friend had a Hip- Hop education program called “Hip- Hop movement Projex” at MAc Arthur Park and Echo Park in Los Angeles back in the early 2000’s we taught, educated, n inspired a number of Asian Kids and Latinos to embrace the culture. Two of them are now internationally known. One is “Dumbfoundead” the Rapper of Korean decent learned the foundation from us then graduated to be down with Project Blowed in Leimert park years later then traveling overseas rapping! He even anppered in a movie with Eminem! and “Kamky” of Chinese decent a phenomenal Poplocker I personally instructed on Saturdays n Thursday nights now he appearing on shows in China and entering international contest!!! So proud of them! Remember this was twenty years ago!!!

I was surprised to know when I was in the States that a lot of brothers also like martial arts movies like Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee but also anime (Japanese animation) too.

This is not the time to call for us to unite while trying to rewrite black (american) history. Hip hop had not oriental influences that furthered the culture. It would be more righteous to act as a guest and not the creator. nor the host. History repeats itself

Grandmaster flash and the furious 5... The Wu-Tang clan... And many other hip hop collectives were directly influenced by the Asian action movies... Blacksploitation of dress and some moves... To deny the Asian influence on hip-hop... When New York has a sizeable Asian-American population... Is flat-out ridiculous... A lot of hip hop crews and breakdancing crews borrowed from asian culture.

Hip hop's whole MO is about how black kids took disperate parts of what they saw around then... And recontextualized / filtered it through their minds: Using poetry, visual art, fashion, movement/dancing and new sounds...

Folks really need to learn this stuff before they start hollering about appropriation... Music and culture are about exchanges between people anyway... So all of these separationist azzholes can kill that noise.

As long as people are respecting the art & the pillars it's hip-hop... Because there are a lot of black so-called hip hoppers who are not respecting any of it ! while some other races ARE KEEPING THE REAL SPIRIT OF HIP-HOP ALIVE 💯💯💯💯💯 I can name about seven UK hip hoppers off the top of my head who represent MUCH MORE THAN SEXXYRED and all these other STRUGGLE RAPPERS

There is no Asian influence on early hip hop this is nothing more then Historical Revisionism. Asians, Whites and most Latinos wanted nothing to do with black people hip hop or rap during it's infancy. Hell we could barely go to a non black persons house because either they or their parents were so racist against blacks. Furthermore the early pioneers of Hip Hop were all black during the late 1970's and early 1980's. DJ Kool Herc extended Funk breakbeats which formed the basis of Hip Hop music, Afrika Bambaata and Theodore GrandWizard (pioneer of turntable scratching) the only Non-Black involved in the early creation was a half Puerto-Rican half Cuban named Disco Wiz and even he himself caught flack for hanging with "Moreno's" What Asian person was involved in the early creation of Hip Hop? What's his or her name?

Probably for certain groups but initially Hip Hop was made by us and our Nuyo Rican brothers & sisters. The Asian influence came later on in groups like the Wu Tang.
