It is indeed very important to realize that many of the things we dislike in ourselves are actually relatively widespread and thus 'normal'. However, what I believe _is_ a mistake is to assume that just because something is common, it is completely ok. When you accept that certain issues (like social anxiety) are relatively common, you are able to do something about it more effectively, because you get rid of the additional worry and shame of feeling 'not normal' that can be quite debilitating.

Thank you for this video. When I was in boot camp, a drill instructor said don't be normal. Normal means "no one remembers me". Twenty years later, that still stays with me.

I swear to god, SOL keeps getting exponentially better with time. The recent videos about First world problems, universities,  being offended and love have radically changed my thinking and i'm so grateful to be exposed to these ideas in such hormone fuelled, formative years of my life. I've often been called weird by my friends, and i can tell some people definitely get turned away by it. But i guess its a part of "discovering who you are" or whatever the crap it means.

Yes, sometimes what society considers odd is actually normal. That's important to know. But other times, what society considers odd, is, in fact... odd. The trick, is having the discernment to make an accurate judgment call about what is truly normal vs. odd in whatever situation you're in, because it's not always going to be one or the other.

This is priceless. :)) I grow up in Vietnam, a country of reactive and cynical people. I was feeling so bad today that I am the only one who is always judged :)), as I express myself and people don't because they fear of rejection and being themselves fully (driving fast on the road for fun when I have free time, singing in my room along to my favorite songs while living with other condo-mates, moving out from parents to a rent on my own though we live in the same city when I was 23). But they are not normal too in some way. This is liberating. :))
