The British wife of ousted Syrian leader Bashar Assad is a sanctioned individual and is "not welcome here in the UK", the Foreign Secretary has said.

David Lammy's comments come after the Prime Minister said it was too early to say whether the Government would strip Asma al-Assad of her British citizenship.

Mrs Assad was born in London in 1975 and was raised and educated in the city. She is now believed to be in Moscow with her husband, where the overthrown leader has fled.

The rapid collapse of the Assad regime saw a coalition of rebel groups seize control of Damascus on Sunday.

3:41 “Is it legitimate to ask questions about whether she’s a security risk to Britain?”
4:40 “She must be considered culpable by association”
6:10 “If she did turn up in the UK there would be questions about whether she should be put on trial”
8:49 “Can Asma al-Assad’s citizenship be stripped in absentia?”
11:16 “Many British women and men marry foreign leaders”

LBC should be aware Assad was the official guest of the queen at Buckingham palace. Was the queen also not aware of who assad was?

Of course she would be made welcome here in the UK, She has money which appears to be the only "moral virtue" that Britian requires.

Not that she had any intention whatsoever to come to the UK. A completely pointless discussion.

Being made to live again in Britain would be punishment enough

I also read this morning Bashar signed over $135 billion dollars of Syria's sovereign fund to Russian banks before he fled. Incredible, neither of them should be allowed into Western countries. There should be charges pending against the Assad regime. Bashar should be in prison.

However, Netanyahu and Gallant are welcome. The hypocrisy is absurd.

I'm not so sure taking away her British citizenship would cause her a moments consideration.

All she has to do is claim she's Israeli and she will be fine.
