Why did Henry VIII create the Church of England?

It's one of the most well known chapters of history... A king wants a divorce and when the Pope doesn't give it to him, he splits from Catholicism. Yet so much myth has shrouded this famous chapter that the specifics are often forgotten. In today's video, we look at Henry from birth to death and look at why the Church of England really began. Henry VIII's legacy has been entirely shaped by his divorces and subsequent marriages to 6 women in total. However, there is much more to Henry VIII than meets the eye and in this video, Mr. Mitchell unpacks it.

Henry was an egomaniac. So when the suggestion that he just head his own church popped up he jumped on it. In his eyes this made him the equal of the Pope. Plus there was the whole Divorce thing.

Just want to say, technically Henry 7th didn't defeat Richard 3rd
The lancastrian army and the men under lord Stanley ( a traitor who switched sides from Richard to Henry) turning the odds to favour the lancastrians, won the battle of Bosworth.
Unlike Richard 3rd, who actually died fighting, Henry didn't fight, he hid behind 5 other soldiers, Richard killed three of them and would've killed Henry but his horse was cut down and the lancastrians cut Richard to bits on the battle ground.
Saying Henry won the battle makes it sound like he was involved in the fighting...

Christ’s words in The Bible, condemn divorce( that’s why Catholics aren’t allowed). Annulment is a different matter. Henry didn’t like the pope telling him what he couldn’t do, so he made himself pope of England in effect. Let’s not forget all the tens of thousands of innocent monks, priests and nuns who were massacred under Henry’s orders.

Actually, Henry did not "invent" the Church of England. The church was firmly established in the British Isles long before the Roman church went there. Another point to consider is that in the 16th century, divorce was understood differently than how we think of it today. Marriage was a union created by God that could not be undone by man. Divorce then was more like what we think of as separation. What Henry wanted was an annulment - a declaration that the marriage was not valid to begin with.
