How 3D holograms work

preview_player
Показать описание
Holograms are photographic recordings of 3D scenes. Unlike a camera, which captures one view through a small viewer focused by a lens, holograms capture an entire light field which allows them to recreate the 3D scene. Shimmery 2D projections, like pre-recorded Pepper’s ghost illusion, are often confused with 3D holograms.

Hello Physics Girl, we in the holography community are so happy you made this video! There are so many false claims nowadays about what a hologram is. It´s just perfect to see somebody actually knows what it´s about!

Conclusion: It's kinda hard to explain.

It is a very good introduction to the topic, though of course, a much longer video would be required to fully explain how the diffraction properties of waves ends up producing a 3D image that rotates in the correct way when we change angle we look at it from.

As a kid in the 80's I always wondered how the holograms for stickers like Lisa Frank and on toy lines like the Visionaries & Supernaturals were created, they appeared to be sculptures photographed in 3D. Thank you for a brief look into the creation of those images and if you don't know about the figures I am referring to, check them out, esp. the Visionaries line, some amazingly articulated 1980's nostalgia right there !!!

Finally, someone able to patiently explain holograms to a non-scientist like me! Thank you!

Because so many people think they are holograms, I always refer to peppers ghost as "holograms" with full air quotes. Most of my high school friends hate physics and don't want another long winded explanation from me.
But I LOVE holograms and optics. I want to minor in physics and I think I could do a lot of research there.

Finally a good explanation. Thank you.

The best video I found to explain hollograms quicly but not too superficial

I find the concept of a holographic film retaining the full image when cut very interesting.

this chanel is one of the best physics channels on YouTube, watch out Derek, there's a new channel in town!

I'm really amazed by holograms.. when you look at them up close, it's like there's a little 3D world in there.
So cool !

Could you please post the email you must have sent to your friends asking them to come over and walk randomly around the backyard?

Thanks! You managed to create a really understandable explanaiton of how a hologram works without sacrificing accuracy! Much love.

I am honestly saying...its one of my favorite physics channel

Weak. hand-drawn teaching elements with an abundant scarcity in technical detail. Great for 3rd graders.

So much for physics, girl.

All the same, cheers for the effort.

Instruction for understanding the science of things by someone who knows how to relate to those who are not already saturated with scientific information ...it's continually interesting, amazing and wonderful.

Great explanation, the backyard-bullet time was cool too.

I just found this video and am really impressed with the quality that this was in 2015.

Once went to a hologram museum in Indiana (don't think it'a there anymore), and they had a hologram of Ronald Reagan. Those things are awesome but creepy looking. They're not just 3 dimensional. You can see all kinds of detail that just isn't there on a regular photograph: moisture on the eyes, light glinting off the hair on the skin. Of course there's no way to show this in a video, but it's pretty striking when you see them in person.
