This was Avoure's closer to his incredible set that night. I’m a different person after having seen Avoure spin live on a rooftop in Brooklyn. I’ll never be the same and this feeling of euphoria will never end. This isn’t an autograph on my hand that I’m never gonna wash off. Instead I am deeply connected to this guy’s music and his world class combination of rhythm & intelligence. When I first heard his work in 2018 it inspired me to fulfill my own destiny in this music. The soulful nature of his art also helped provide the soundtrack to the ushering in of my long awaited, long-planned, long desired transition from male to female.

But back to the scene of the jam. The beautiful people were there in attendance but it wasn’t really about them or even 57-year-old me. At the turntables before us was not a mere DJ/Producer but frankly the most unique talent in dance music. Now why he is not universally recognized as such is not the topic for here. Though it is eternally frustrating and inexplicable that a man whose creativity has been streamed on various platforms well over a 100 million times has to bizarrely masquerade in this industry and society devoid of the standing he richly deserves.

This is also not a profile of Avoure. Well okay no worries I’ll give you the quick description– Which is that his career began circa 2018 from very humble roots in his native Ukraine. He lived there even at the start of the war. His career went radio silent naturally when the war started and he likely saw horrific things as he virtually disappeared from social media leaving his fans deeply shook. But about a year or two ago he became based in Los Angeles, performed on some Lane 8 This Never Happened live events and also started his own label.

From the moment Avoure’s set began it was outstandingly obvious and confirmed I was watching a genius at work highly deserving of a larger venue and bigger crowds. It was akin to seeing Sting perform at a dive bar. However I took advantage of the situation to take a spot near the turntables. Not too close at the beginning though because I didn’t want him to feel crowded by my presence. We had talked a few times online over the years and he knew how big of a supporter of his I have been since the beginning of his career. But I didn’t “know “ him per se, and certainly had no expectations of even meeting him. But he did know I was coming to experience seeing him perform live.

From up close I saw my biggest inspiration perform a magical two hour set featuring original music of his mixed with tracks of others he enjoys. The crowd steadily started to realize this was no ordinary scenario and as his set progressed they got noticeably more interested and began creeping to the front eventually settling there. When the set ended with the finale of his anthemic hit “Aura” everybody was on lock. The climax for me though actually happened a few minutes prior when during his set Avoure motioned for me to come over. He held out his hand to embrace. I said “Hi I’m Karen” and he responded “I know.” It was such a beautiful moment. He was feeling exhilarated while basking in the success of his triumphant NYC debut and I was just overwhelmed with joy. I couldn’t believe it. I knew he was aware of me but this far exceeded my wildest dreams. The dream was to see him perform live. That was satiated. His heartfelt acknowledgement of me sent me into emotional orbit. I respect his unique art and compelling life journey deeply and it was so nice and classy of him to do what he did. I’m really just touched and virtually in tears as I write this.
