Today I'll be introducing you to some uncommon and unusual citrus varieties that you may not have seen before and that you've got to try. Some of these varieties are commonly grown in some countries but relatively unheard of in others. The citrus fruits we'll be talking about and tasting today are Vaniglia Sanguigno (AKA mango orange, vanilla blood orange, and strawberry orange), Tangelo Seminole, Rangpur Lime, Satsuma Mandarin, Encore Mandarin, Cutlers Red Grapefruit and Chinotto. We'll be talking a bit about each citrus variety and tasting the fruits to see what each one is like. The growing requirements for each type is relatively similar to many other citrus, though do consider the cold hardiness of each type when deciding to plant, as some will be more cold hardy than others and also grow to different sizes etc.

More information on anthocyanins and lycopene:
Anthocyanins are water-soluble vacuolar pigments that, may appear red, blue, purple, or black, depending on their pH value. Food plants rich in anthocyanins include blueberries, raspberries, black soybean, and black rice, among many others in the colour range described above. Autumn leaf colours are sometimes derived from anthocyanins too.

Lycopene is a bright red carotenoid hydrocarbon found in tomatoes as well as other red fruits and vegetables, like red carrots, grapefruits, watermelons and papayas

I have absolutely no interest in any of this, but the passion this guy has towards plants and the way he shares his knowledge is amazing!

Hey Kalem I am Italian, yes chinotto is one of my favourite drinks. San Pellegrino does a good version in small can. To fully appreciate it you need a real hot sunny day, plenty of ice in a glass with a super cold can of chinotto slowly poured on it. It is one of the best thing you can ever drink in summer in Italy. Sadly is full of sugar so I keep it as a rare treat. :)

I can't believe I only just discovered your channel! I also live in New Zealand and although I don't have any of my own land yet to start my garden, I have a massive dream of trying to grow anything and everything, so I am so happy that you have all these videos about growing in our NZ climate which I find is very unique to other places around the world. Keep doing what you're doing, and I'm loving your videos a lot so far! Also one of the easiest subscribes ever 😆

Satsumas are the best. I have 3 grown trees outside and I have 11 seedlings growing in containers! (I got bored during quarantine the last year and a half and have been growing tons of them. 🤣) Would definitely recommend satsumas for everyone!

I've been to Italy a few times, and had chinotto. It's an acquired taste, it's bitter as hell but once you get past that it's really delicious. The bitterness makes the drink really refreshing in my opinion. It's my favourite soda in the world.

Great presentation. We have a lifelong appreciation of Citrus. We have been growing lemons and limes in containers for about 12-15 years. Also, a finger lime for about 5-6 years. Gig Harbor, Washington, USA.

My favourite way to eat grapefruit is once halved, put in bowl, drizzle passionfruit pulp on top, then scoop out the grapefruit segments. Makes the end part of drinking the leftover juices extra special :)

I can't quite believe I'm learning so much about gardening from a dude in NZ! But I like the way you present, as whenever I think of a question, it's often the very next issue you address! VERY thorough. Thank you for sharing!!

I wish more people grew their own produce since it’s rewarding and can be a great way to try new stuff you’ve never heard of

great videos bro! Im an Italian kiwi, my mother grew up in a small northern town called Rapallo where Chinotto grown on nearly all the streets as ornamental plants. they're bitter as, the drink is bitter too but more bitter-sweet, I couldn't stand it as a kid.
I think they grow all over Monaco too and they make a liquor out of them.

Nice one Kalem. 👍 Have heard of a few of these. We used to get the tangelos here & they are my fave but can't find them in the shops now. Would like to find a tree at some point.
Cheers & have a top one. 😁
