In December 2021 President Biden signed an executive order authorizing the State Department to create an online passport renewal system. Now, after three successful tests the United States Department of State has announced that starting in 2023 U.S. citizens will be able to renew their passports online. One of the goals of this new system is to decrease the time it takes for a passport to be renewed and the timing couldn't be better. For the last year when a spike in renewal applications occur wait times have increased, sometimes to as long as 18 weeks.
