FYI - as of October / November 2023, got mine via expedited mail renewal in exactly 2 weeks from filing. I paid for the fast shipping and I also used priority mail to send the renewal application. Def allow the full amount of time they quote before planning travel just to be safe, but looks like the passport office is finally catching up.

Thanks for the help. Just a story from my past, I was a Department of Defense Civilian Contractor in Afghanistan in 2005 and then an expat in Thailand in 2006. I cannot count the number of times a coworker or friend let their passport expire while abroad. Obviously they needed to go to the US Embassy. And seldom was the process completed the same day. A nightmare.

I have been working with Rush my passport but the service is horrible I ended up using A-Passport & Visa service in New York. These guys are very helpful got my passport in 3 days.

i realized my passport was expired two days before travel plans, made a next day appointment at a state department passport office for 8am, and received my passport SAME DAY for only 190$ (130$ normal fee, plus 60$ expedited). This only works if a) there happens to be an appointment available, i got lucky and there was ONE appointment available, and b) if you have proof that you have travel plans the next day. It doesn’t have to be life or death. I was in and out of the office in FIFTEEN minutes, and came back later that day to pick up my passport at 1. Everyone was so kind and efficient, I was expecting more of a DMV type experience but it was the best government office experience I’ve ever had 😅 If your travel plans are not next day, they will mail it to you, overnight if necessary .

I just (September 2024) renewed mine by expedited and it was 13 days (i.e., a day less than 2 weeks) from dropping at post office to receiving it in PO box. YMMV.

I did my last passport renewal while out of the USA, while in Malabo Dos at the US embassy. I had to make a appointment, drop my renewal off, plus fees in US currency, release my current passport.

I think from start to finish it was like 3-4weeks and the cool thing, I didn't need to make a followup appointment just only needed to call 24hour ahead to have the passport delivered to the security building, where they match. you and your passport, and they hand it over after signing.

I was very impressed on how the Embassy handle my renewal.

Tip if you do a lot of international travel for business, get the large book to get more pages. I was literally running out of space in my standard booklet.

A few yrs ago, I had a business trip that necessitated making an appointment at a passport agency in Houston to get my renewal expedited. Note that getting an appointment date and time means your appointment time is waiting in line with dozens and dozens and dozens and dozens more people with the same appointment time as you. It just gives you the right to enter the building and wait in line. I literally waited for several hours just to talk to someone and another hour or 2 to get my passport.

Current timelines on or after November 6 2023, are 7-10 weeks for routine or 3-5 weeks for Expedited.

Here are the current timelines for applications after 10/2/2024.

Routine: 4-6 weeks
Expedited: 2-3 weeks

State department appointments are also available if you need to travel in less than 2 weeks for either life or death or urgent service. You must bring proof of travel and if you have a life or death appointment you must also bring proof of that as well (translations needed if not in english). No need for rushmypassport these days.

I used rush my passport and was able to get a passport in about 8 business days. The cost was hefty and the process was a little confusing but they got it done. The important part is that you fulfill your end with submitting documents properly and on time. There’s no room for error.

1/3/25 I renewed my passport using the new on-line option. Use the Government portal to fill out the forms and you must have a digital photo to upload. Their system checks your digital image and tells you if it's accepted or not. There are specific requirements for the image and file. It wouldn't take mine so I went to a local Walgreens and got a photo along with the file on a thumb drive. I used standard delivery method, so it was $130. I filled out the application on December 24th and it arrived today Jan 3 so 10 days using standard delivery. Shocking.
