👉Stubbs unboxes, gives impressions, and tests out games on the RP5 with its vibrant AMOLED screen, sent for review from Retroid. He also shares the RH origin story, and talks about the importance of transparency in reviews. What's he think about the latest Retroid? Let's dive in and find out!

The Retroid Pocket 5 is a semi powerful and compact retro gaming handheld that features a 5.5-inch AMOLED display with a 1080p resolution, providing very vibrant visuals. It is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 chipset and an Adreno 650 GPU, giving solid performance for a wide range of games. The device includes 8GB of LPDDR4x RAM and 128GB of UFS 3.1 storage, which should do well for up to Switch emulation. Additionally, it boasts a 5000mAh battery and active cooling to prevent overheating. Running on Android 13, the Retroid Pocket 5 supports Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.1, making it a nice choice for newer native Android games, additionally, you can now load Linux via Batocera or ROCKNIX on it!

Notes: At 11:23 I said "IPS" by accident, this is an AMOLED display. I've clipped this out to avoid anymore confusion. 😛

lol all these ppl nitpicking “cancelled my order due to button size/glass front/waiting for my perfect handheld” only to just scroll through roms and never play anything anyways

I think a PS2 emulation stress test would be really useful, to see what games would be considered the upper limit

That black looks the best. Just blends the screen perfectly

My issue with Retroid has always been that there ergonomics suck. The RP5 looks like they nailed it

I just learned that the 865 and the Gen 2 are really the better chips done by TSMC. The 888 and the Gen 1 are prone to overheating, the reason you don't see them much and not made by TSMC

The RP2S recently became my main retro console, which is funny because I have it since release and only now it clicked.

For context I own the Miyoo Mini+, RG35XX (og), RG35XX H and the A30.

It just feels good, and while I prefer the Linux experience, once I'm playing a game, the RP2S feels the best to me.

Been playing FF6 Pixel Remaster (android) on it.

Bought one of these for when I travel to BC in December. This should be fun! :)

We all complain about the price like if we have not already wasted $500 on Anbernic consoles in total and none of those gets even close to this anyway

Wow. Didn't expect this to be the first "first look" on November 1st.

aesthetics is subjective of course, but I think the black model looks like the best of the 3 (and thankfully isn't using transparent/translucent plastic)

I wished reviewers use side to side comparism with phones instead. Because not everyone has a handheld but with phones, it will be easier for me to get an estimate on how it would feel like on my hands personally.

I'm new to the hobby. I have a Miyoo A30, Powkiddy V10, and just recently a RG 406v. My wife has the TrimUI Smart Pro. I have this RP5 pre-ordered. It will be my first real higher-end device. Not having anything to compare it to, I'm sure I will love it tbh. really as far as collecting and form factor... I'm just waiting on a RG 40xx SP to round out the Vertical vs Horizontal vs SP forms and have a nice collection.

I don't know much about good Android games. A showcase of the best stuff would be a nice intro for people like me.

7:52 The "circle motif" and the all-glass-front is clearly a PS Vita styling choice, imho

Does it support battery bypass when docking? I will go weeks of just using it docked then weeks of using it while traveling and have trashed more than a couple batteries this way

I think I have a sickness. I watched the entirety of the RH & Friends four hour live stream and still I wanted more quality RP5 content. So, here I am.

I wrote in the live chat when Stubbs and Rob did the size comparison that I didn't get the RP5 until that moment. I'll repeat it here: I thought the RP5 was going to be a big chungus. I knew the specs because I can read. I just couldn't properly visualize them. The 5 looks porcine in pictures. Why buy a slightly smaller and markedly less capable Odin2 Base for 70% of the price, right?...

...Wrong! This thing is as petite as Stubbs' pug. I was very enthused about the Mini's size to performance ratio. I still am; but, I was then too. That said, my enthusiasm for the Mini has been somewhat tempered by this unit being Vita sized. That's just a wonderful all around size that will fit in my pants pockets and be big at home. The performance on-tap makes sense for this class of handheld, just like it did for the Mini. I get it now!

I don't want to say that I'm happy I didn't end up getting a Mini, because there's a good chance that I still will anyways. It's just that deciding between the Mini and the 5 went from a slam dunk, stone cold lead pipe lock to 2000's Presidential Election. They're both awesome devices that Retroid should be proud of.

I hope people don't start accusing me of shilling...
