I need to make an update about this announcement. Both the RP5 and Mini will be using Android 10 for its OS and I only saw this after making this video when the product page went live, this wasn't announced until the page went live. This has something to do with the SD865 and it not officially supporting higher versions of Android, and one of the people at Retroid said in Discord it won't come until 2025. For people interested in Switch emulation this means there is no Switch emulation, you may be able to find some of the converted builds for Yuzu to run on Android 10 but they're out of date.

TLDR: The RP5 cannot do Switch emulation because of Android 10, any hopes for Switch emulation lie in a more recent version of Android which might not come until 2025.

We need an OLED Odin 3 with Snap Dragon Gen 3

Dang, that Mini is tempting. 4:3 screen, Linux support, really good GC and PS2, front firing speakers. I really shouldn't buy it, I know I would just play with it for a day and then leave it to collect dust, but Retroid has been making some appealing devices lately.

Also I sort of want both the Mini and the 5 but can't decide. I just love these dual analog stick devices though! So glad Retroid has stuck to that.

It's mixed bag. But it's better to just put more cash for the Odin 2. Specially if you want graphic intensive android games, switch and winlator.

But if you just want some upscaled ps2, then it's passable.

The RP5 is the price I expected it to be (nearer to $200 than $250) and it’s a great deal because of the OLED. However, the Mini is way more than I thought it would be (nearer to $150 than $200), and i think it’s going to struggle at the price. Despite being initially interested in it, a 3.7” screen (even though it’s an OLED with a great resolution) is just going to feel too small for my aging eyes.

Either way, I’ll just stick to my Odin 2. It doesn’t have an OLED screen but the 6” LCD it does have is a decent one.

I’m waiting to see the 406m from anbernic, as the 405m is the perfect form factor for me.
These devices look pretty good actually, but the thing that interests me the most is Linux compatibility. It’s be great not having to tinker with Android.

The fact that it can dual boot Linux or Android is cool, I've always been a fan of Emulation Station and that's what it will run via Batocera so that's cool

SD 865 will play everything up to ps2/3ds with upscaling in most cases, dont expect great things from winlator and switch emulation tho.The 6 gb ram wont help for those systems either.

Price on the RP5 is much better than I expected, but I did just get my RP4 Pro about a month ago and overall quite happy with it. Aside from that I have an RG35XX H with MuOS installed with Portmaster as well as a Steamdeck OLED with a 2TB SSD.

Half tempted to get the RP5 just to mess around with, but it is pretty hard to justify. It doesn't really offer much I'm not already covered by besides an OLED 1080P screen. I guess I'm mostly curious how the 865 chip will do performance wise for PS2 and GC along with battery life compared to the RP4P.

The price point is right for a SD865 but that's because it's a near five year old SOC. Even with custom driver support it's not going to make any sort of real difference over the RP4+, especially since they are using just 6GB of RAM. Had they pushed the RP5 to 8GB that would have made a real difference and Switch emulation would have been viable. The GameCube version of the RP5 really had me tempted but with the specs they are using I'm not going to buy.

It's not a bad system by any means but I look at the specs of the RP5 and it's like they've deliberately made it worse than they could have.

Rp5 looks more premium and comfortable to hold, no sharp squared off edges. Hope it turns out well.

My S24 ultra uses a Snap Dragon Gen 3. I think in the future, we can expect PC emulators for the S24 and some amazing emulators for ps4. Issue is space, Samsung needs to give phone card slots.

The screen size of the rp5 is about perfect, they really pushed it to the limit of available space. I love the mini 4:3 but can’t help but feel that it’s leaving a lot of potential screen space behind. Could’ve easily gone over 4”

$199 and $219? Sweet!!!
But Android 10? This isn't the Odin with it's 845 stuck on 10. This is a 2 generation newer chip stuck on android 10.

They dropped the ball if this is true, they had years to do this. It's a 4yo chip that even an old Oneplus 8 which debut with Android 10 has Android 13 already.

I'm a little mixed on the Mini. I've gotten most of the GC games I want to play working on my 2S, but my main concern is the heat building from it. I don't know exactly how much more of an upgrade the mini is vs the 2S, but I'm not entirely sure it's worth paying literally double the price of it just to be able to play a few more GC games and have a cooling fan inside it.

Giving the RP4P to my kid and ordering the combo pack. Black for the mini…and there’s something about that GC color on the 5 that makes my inner child jump up and down.

If RP5 runs SEGA Saturn "flawlessly", I'm in.

If they'd put the left stick up top, the Mini seems like it would be a great GC machine. I don't want to play analogue centric games with a left stick at the bottom.
