I was on the USS Enterprise in the 80’s. People don’t realize how big this jet is. It was mind boggling watching these big birds land on the deck. It was referred to as a “controlled crash” 😂. All the other jets looked fairly small compared to the Tomcat. Was sad to see her go. But I guess the fact that we sold some to the Iranians played a part in the decision to stop using the F-14. Besides the fact that it cost a boatload to maintain and operate. I remember we would have “airshows” for “distinguished visitors “ on the flight deck. They were usually Arabs and they set out some nice chairs and a mat (carpeting or padding of some sort) and they would give demonstrations. They would start with launching Tomcats. They would climb at a ridiculously rate while folding the wings until the plane looked like a triangle in the sky. Then they would break the sound barrier flying parallel to the deck and it would certainly get your attention 😂. If I was below deck and I heard a huge “ba-boom!!” I knew they were giving a demo. And I’d come up to watch if I wasn’t engaged in work. They would have a small craft sailing off our port side that the demo aircraft would do strafing runs on. Pretty cool. But yeah, the Tomcat was a beastly aircraft. Sad to see her go 😢.

The most beautiful looking fighter jet ever made imo. She’s also super massive!

Nice job, both of you!

9:00 Joe "Dirt" Durmon, VF-213, Enterprise. RIP, my friend!
10:00 I had to look it up. It's the Rutkowski profile, I believe.
32:45 My recollection (I flew the A, but not the B or D) is that at very high AOA, the shape of the fuselage between the motors was an air foil capable of providing significant lift. 60% of total is what I remember. That made for some very interesting flying techniques, to maximize the level of hurt you could apply to others at high AOA.

Seeing Rhino review the plane was a treat. We were in VF-2 together and the thrill of flying the machine is never lost.

Excellent dissertation. TY Pity that the F-14D did not get higher rate production, and under go even further development, it might have survived as the F-15 (EX) has today.

I served in the Navy from 1967-1989; first as an Air Traffic Controller my first 10 years & then as a Data Analyst my last 12 years before being medically retired! I was stationed onboard first, the USS Coral Sea, then UUSS Ranger & finally the USS Constellation! Also served in 4 Naval Air Squadrons! My first experience with dealing with the very first F-14 was being stationed at NAS Point Mugu; where I was the Control Tower Supervisor! At that time, we not only had the civilian pilots with the F-14 being put through the numbers as it hadn’t been accepted yet officially by the Navy! We also, at the same time had the F-15 Eagle at Point Mugu, Aldo being put through the numbers or being tested & analyzed! I’ll never quite forget the last day that both of these aircraft were leaving our station gf or being tested in our Sea Test Range (literally literally an area of water stretching from our station to Hawaii with warning area and restricted areas in operation)! I don’t wanna take up too much more space here, but I will say that both aircraft were Taxing to the end of the runway for takeoff separately! The F-15 what is the first to text out onto the runway and specifically asked for clearance for an unrestricted takeoff! This type of takeoff what is the sole responsibility for approval by the control tower supervisor which was me! Since we had a civilian airline that crossed right over the top of our airspace; I had to make sure that they were not in the vicinity when giving this permission to the F-15 & later to the F-14 aircraft! The particular maneuver, I will explain some other time if anyone’s interested, was quite unusual and something I’ve never seen before as the control tower supervisor! Basically that aircraft was going to show off in front of the Navy F-14 aircraft! After the F-15 completed its maneuver and unrestricted climb out of the airspace, immediately the F-14 pilot keyed his microphone and simply said, “What a dog”! Then the F-14 aircraft maneuvered onto the end of the runway also requesting an unrestricted climb out of the airspace! Upon takeoff, the F-14 did it quite unusual maneuver again something I’ve never seen before as a control tower supervisor; and then was out of our airspace! (please note that it would take just as much space as my whole reply has taken so far to explain both of the aircraft particular maneuvers during a non-restricted air climb out of the airspace at Naval Air Station Point Mugu, California)

I live a few miles from there. Very nice museum. I served on the Lexington and Forrestal. Great ships and that tomcat was amazing.

First thing I noticed when I got to get up close to an F14 back in the 80's was how big it is. Same with an F15. F4 is my all time favorite jet tho. The 188th in Fort Smith, AR, where I grew up had them, and I loved to ride my bike to the end of the runway and watch them take off or land.

literally the coolest plane that was ever invented. I did my re-enlistment to the navy in front of this exact plane at the National Aviation Museum down in Pensacola because of my love of it and its history very cool to see this interview about it.

He needed to climb up in the cockpit and sit in that seat again. I bet the smells alone would trigger many forgotten memories

32:18 *First time I've ever seen an F-14 light the fuel as it was coming out the back (like the F-111s were famous for). I wondered if this was possible - now I know!*

Am I correct in saying that the F-111 was only adjustable for wing sweep manually?

How will Tom cruise make a third top gun movie without any operational and flying tomcats?
