Very interesting
I like that he was honest about we never stop learning
And that the is more then one way to achieve what you are doing
Thanks for the invite to another great video

I do a lot of hardfacing at work on thrust rollers for a metal recycling place on a roll out machine. The pieces weigh 400 pounds we machine the shaft and the roller then hard face the roller. I use 1/16" stoody 50 lb roll using c25 gas. We preheat to 500 degrees then weld it out. And right after we gotta machine it to size on the lathes before it cools because once it cools it destroys are carbide inserts. I do about 3 of them every 3 weeks. And that wire burns hot and you gotta set the machine just right to not get undercut or dropping metal when welding. And keep it just hot enough to get good penetration. You do it right you can weld it machine and its done and good to go. We do a 3 bead pass to fill it up you want the puddle to be about 1/4" and have the same height flush in all 3 passes. So it takes less time to machine.

I own a welding business in Michigan trust me on this the best gas to use with metal core wire is 98/2 that'll be the smoothest wire you ever run with that gas, from short circuit all the way up to spray it'll run flawlessly I can hear the crispy sound in your weld the ark is not fully stabilising.

You can use 90/10 but 98/2 is the ultimate with metal core wire

I have since retired but I own Vulcan Masters in Detroit Michigan

Have been looking for hard facing in mig. Very much appreciated.

I've only ever run metal core with 80/20 or higher argon. It's a spray transfer. Also, , in my limited experience, unless you have a machine that will pulse, the puddle is so fluid that it will only run decently in the flat.
I ran at between 24 to 26 volts and whatever wire feed got me the least splatter.

Must be augers for geotech work, SPT sampling in particular. I got similar augers, haven't found a hardface that works good for the material I drill through yet.. sometimes rebuilding bits every hundred feet.

Can you do a pipe to plate test on 6in pipe with bevel, tig root and stick cap please and thank you!

At least in automation (Robot welding), metal core is often used to get faster weld speeds. Same principle as why it works for laying down more metal at normal speeds (similar to 7024 stick welding). But it's pricey, which is why my employer hardly if ever uses it.

We do a good bit of hardfacing (or hard/tool steel repair in general) with TIG on stamping dies. Always ground down after, but for precision work it's the way to go.

I started watching this mostly because I thought you were going to do a weld video with metal core the music genre 😂 😳

Never used it. I can’t use 33 lb spools. Does this stuff come in 11 lb spools?

I used to do that with mining equipment on a much larger scale. I used mig.

You have a rotator there why didn't you use it?

metal core likes to be sprayed. 90/10 run it hot and fast

90/10 for gas unless you can get 92/8. If you're getting paid by the hour, stick weld it. The most boring job I ever had was hard facing augers for a drilling company years ago.

MCAW doesn’t really perform the best in out of position welds, from my experience it runs the best when in position flat and horizontal beads, otherwise flip to dual shield for out of position.

Maybe you need a different gas or gas mix

I thought metal core hard facing releases a bunch of very dangerous gases and particles and respirators are mandatory..

Augur: to foretell; 1. to foretell especially from omens. 2. : to give promise of : presage. This bad news augurs disaster for all of us. intransitive verb.
Auger: any of various tools or devices with a helical shaft or part that are used for boring holes (as in wood, soil, or ice) or moving loose material (such as snow)
