The term "show" can absolutely refer to a movie. It can refer to any production that is being shown. Therefore, a movie (especially one being shown at a theatre) can be referred to as a show. Thing is, an episode of a tv show could also be referred to as a movie. This is because the term "movie" is a shortened version of "moving picture", which a tv show is also a moving picture.

It's the difference between saying "I'm going to see a movie, " when you see a movie at a Cinema and "I'm going to watch a movie, " when you watch a movie on your screen at home. We use these phrases to refer to different actions, though both are technically correct when used in either context.

Edit: By the way, the point about MAD magazine being outdated is weird to me. MAD was relevant at least until 2010. It was pretty popular even when I was a kid (and I'm a 2000's baby) and even had a couple of shows based on the magazine. The magazine itself was only discontinued in 2018. I assume it was just a joke, but still a weird thing to say imo XD.
