He was seen as a great wartime leader but not as a peacemaker. That’s why

After just a couple of years of it, they voted him back in.

And then Churchill got his revenge by winning the 1951 election

Churchill was, and in some places still is, pretty deeply unpopular in Britain, and the fact the Tories made their 1945 campaign all about him absolutely contributed to their defeat. Even when the Tories "won" the 1951 election Labour got 200, 000 more votes, and most of the Tory gains were due to the total collapse of the Liberal Party. 1951 is the only election Churchill won as leader of the Tory Party.

Churchill also genuinely wasn't that smart military wise. He had a school boy mentality of constant attack, no defense or resupply etc.

The cult of Winston Churchill grew in the decades after the War. A lot of British WW2 vets hated him actually, and didn’t have the rosy nostalgic view of the conflict we have today.

“I think a curse should rest on me – because I love this war. I know it’s smashing and shattering the lives of thousands every moment – and yet – I can’t help it – I enjoy every second of it.”— Winston Churchill letter to a friend

Written during 1914-19 the war he cheered for despite warning 13 yrs before that nobody would win an industrial war

It helps that Churchill's replacement was the person responsible for the British national health care service. AKA one of his main campaign pledges was to do the British equivalent of Medicare for all when she actually did

It was also due to the problem of India, Churchill wanted to hold onto India but the British people wanted money going to the rebuilding of Britain and not the maintenance of the Empire, Atlee promised Britain leaving India by June 1948 so he got that W too

Maybe the brits should have listened. They wouldn't be getting arrested for misgendering a dude in a dress these days.

Churchill wasn’t a great wartime leader either. He just happened to be in a country with the largest economy on the planet, the largest territory on the planet, the largest navy on the planet, a sea between them and danger, and a strong separation of powers.

When he did go over everyone’s heads and intervened directly in the affairs of war it resulted in military catastrophes from the first time he oversaw a war till the last such as:

1. the first British naval defeat since the napoleonic wars in which he threatened the naval commander of the South American fleet into engaging a German fleet which was faster and had longer range which in naval terms means sure defeat barring a miracle.

2: the battle of Gallipoli, his brainchild which caused his temporary demotion in WW1 due to sheer incompetence, largely ending his nepotistic reign until he clawed it back in peace time when he couldn’t screw over his own country riding off his famous family name.

3. The thing that ousted chamberlain, the Nazi invasion of Norway was his fuck-up. The British knew the value of Norway, yet he allowed the Germans C tier rinky dink navy to land unopposed all along the Norwegian coast even as far north as Trondheim. This resulted in Germany securing their iron supply and allowing their war industry to keep running. Instead of sacking the lord admiral for the naval fuckup of epic proportions they made him PM.

4. The battle of Singapore is generally considered the most humiliating land defeat Britain suffered in WW2 with tens of thousands captured by 7 Japanese tanks and a few thousand infantry on bicycles. Churchill pushed the generals to defend on Singapore island, seeing it as a way to force the Japanese to attack across a channel. Little did he know there was no water supply on Singapore so the commanding officers had the option of dying of thirst to satiate Churchills stubbornness or surrender and maybe live. I’ve still heard people call the army facing immediate mass death due to thirst cowardly and Churchill brave for telling these poor fools he doomed to die for him.

5. During the first battle with the Bismarck the main ships opposing them were outgunned and outmatched but were pressed on to attack by Churchill. Naturally this resulted in a famous naval icon being sunk and an experimental battleship having all its main guns disabled. The commander of the surviving battleship with no working guns then decided to flee and not let a ridiculously expensive battleship die pointlessly. Churchill being petty, actively went after this commander for daring to refuse his dumb orders, seeking to sack and even prosecute this man who saved over a thousand sailors and a ridiculously expensive battleship.

These are just the ones that I can remember off the top of my head. The retroactive praise this fat bumbling aristocrat who failed upwards due to wealth and connections and his famous actually competent war hero ancestor receives is honestly a massive pet peeve that will make me go on rants.

The fact that he wasn’t even popular at the time and people have to retroactively explain why their precious bulldog did nothing wrong and was simply ousted after 1 term in an insanely one sided landslide after presiding over a victorious war as just a weird conundrum with no explanation is ridiculous.
