I Got Injured

Injuries are no fun at all, and up until this point in my 30+ years of playing bass, I've only ever heard about them from other people.

Now, it's my turn.

Whilst moving house recently I managed to strain the index finger on my right/picking hand, and this video takes a look at how it has affected my playing over the past few weeks.

I go into detail about how I'm rehabbing it, the exercises I'm using to build strength back up again, and some things you can do to prevent this happening to you.

Wishing you a speedy recovery, Janek. Injuries are no fun, but I am sure you will come back even stronger than ever.

Thank you so much for this video. I had a real problem about 4 years ago with my left hand that caused a lot pain, plus tendinitis, in my pinky and ring finger. Stupid guitars. Anyway, it took 6 months before I could play again, another 2 years before really things felt up to strength. I changed my technique massively, and that has helped so much. Your video and your “healing exercises” are a fantastic insight, and I wish more players put out content like this. Thank you so much, again. Wishing you a full and speedy recovery. Respect 🙏🏻☀️

PS Happy new home. Just moved recently, too. So much work, but like you, the new studio is going to be amazing.

I got a mean tendinitis on the pinky of my fretting hand during my 1st semester at music college. That was a huge bummer and took a long time to heal.

Hope yours heals up quickly!

Damn, I hope you get better fast. I hurt my hand at work and lost most of my feeling in the right hand except my little finger. It took me years to get my hand back to normal feeling and being able to play bass at all. One person that motivated me to play again were you and I am incredibly thankfull for stumbling over your channel. So let me shout a massive THANK YOU JANEK. Love from Vienna

Wishing you a speedy recovery as well. I'm not even a professional player and I dread an injury to my fingers so I can only imagine how it feels as a professional. Wish you the best and thanks for sharing.

Thank you for being willing to share about your injury! I have tendonitis in both forearms and in my left triceps tendon and dealing with those injuries is quite stressful and requires a great deal of energy and intention.

Dang, hope you are getting back on track quickly. Reminds me that last time I moved I was really scared of hurting myself on those handles… I thought that maybe I was overreacting but hearing that you actually hurt yourself on them freaks me out a bit. Get well soon!

I have been playing Bass for 34 years and I love it. I also work in a machine shop. This puts me on edge everyday.

Wishing you a speedy recovery. It’s always the things that we don’t think will injure us that do . Funny, that !

Speedy recovery my good chap. I had a big injury in 2002 6 hours os surgery. Both arms, well shattered left wrist and severed my ulna nerve. I have a few things to accompany it, dyslexia, dyspraxia and ADHD, so falls are part of the fun.
Anyhow I had to hang up the upright but I am still playing loads.
Medical science has moved on and you will be fine. ❤

Really sorry to hear it! I recently found out I have Cubital Tunnel as well as some nerve damage near my neck/left shoulder (tbd how bad it is after an EMG study). Been having lots of pains in my chest, and my left arm went completely numb one night. It's really defeating, but I was just glad to learn it wasn't a heart problem.

I ordered one of those double shoulder straps to try out and I'll see if it helps. I've been wearing a wrist strap while working at the computer.
