Roof leak at B vent pipe flashing - Bad roof install

Leaking roof at furnace B - vent pipe flashing. Things to look for when looking for a roof leak.. This particular roof install had a very bad nail placement issue, probably due to a careless roofer that says his stuff never leaks. I hear some roofers all too often say they are the best roofer ever and their stuff never leaks. When it comes to this type of roof leak it takes time for the nails to rust out and the leak develops years later. So yes their stuff doesn't leak right away, While the homeowner years later finds out their roof is developing issues all over the place. When installing nails it is very important not to put them near the key way of the shingles above. It's also very important whatever roofer is installing the roof to make sure they not only make it look good, but make it last.

Excellent content! This man is fixing problems not the cost. Roofers in my area want to sell complete roof jobs. So here I am learning.

Thanks for creating this video. This rusted nail and bad placement on the flange around that vent was exactly my problem. The roof inside right underneath that nail was rotted out about 6 in in diameter. I suppose I'm going to add some wood over the rotted section inside so that I can nail into a good solid piece of wood when I fix this. I've got to find that caulk you mentioned. Thanks again for doing this!

Don’t know why people try to use fasteners on the exposed flange just caulk under and use screws under the shingled sides

Thats crazy how you can pay someone a lot of money to install your roof and they get lazy about nail placement and it screws you over in the long run. Makes you wonder if people working on houses are doing it right or not

What about using metal roofing screws on the bottom edge of the flashing?

Aren't the roofs supposed to be inspected after an install?

Is it bad to put that wet sealer further up the pipe? Is it a fire hazard or anything?

One of the guys i used to work for would always use screws instead of face nailing any metal. the way he explained it was that over time the metal can pull nails out but not the screws, the screws he used were self tapping and they had grommets on them (basically metal roofing nails) of course he only used them on face nails, but have you seen people do this? He also said that with the screws you don't have to caulk them since they had the grommet! seemed like a great idea to me as long as theyre placed properly, let me know your thoughts on this. another guys on youtube (the average roofer) does this method also.

So, what if there are shingles underneath a flange or metal plate (so that's good), but also the shingles come down on top of the metal, equal length to the metal flange. In your video the shingles stop about a couple of inches above the end. Then there's a bunch of caulk (wish I could post a photos). Does that sound like a good thing? I do worry that the water will wick to the nail.

Why not use a sheet metal roofing screw on the flange? That's what I always do to keep those down
