Top Las Vegas criminal defense attorneys discuss SR22 insurance in Nevada DUI cases.

WHAT IS "SR22 INSURANCE" IN NEVADA?

Nevada residents who get their driver's licenses suspended for a DUI are required to get SR22 Insurance for 3 years in order to get their driver's licenses reinstated. SR22 is a document showing that the defendant informed his/her insurance company that he/she received a DUI and is paying car insurance.

After a DUI, the defendant's insurance company will also notify the Nevada DMV if the defendant loses or is dropped from the insurance company. If that happens, the defendant will have his/her Nevada license suspended again and will have to file a new SR22 for another 3 years.

I was arrested and charged with a DUI in NV because of a false positive for meth with a swab test. Although I was exonerated by the blood test, it showed a trace amount of marijuana. I wasn't high at the time of my DUI, but they charged me anyway. I took it to trial and got the charges dismissed. My license was revoked, I appealed and I was unsuccessful in getting my license back. Now I'm being required to get an SR22, but no one at the DMV will tell me why this is justified. Can you explain it to me?
