As a business analyst, and as a developer, your world will revolve around a Source To Target Mapping. This is usually an excel sheet, also called a Crosswalk or Interface Design Document. These are a layout that analyzes the source, or legacy, systems and also describes the business rules and transformations that need to take place in the client's to be database design. This is at a very granular, database level and is completeness during the requirements gathering process is crucial.
