The Russian army has ordered its troops to withdraw from the Ukranian city of Kherson - marking one of Moscow's biggest retreats since the war began. The Kremlin said its forces would pull back from the west bank of the Nipro River - to adopt new defensive lines on the opposite bank. However, the Ukrainian army isn't rushing into the city yet. In fact, Kyiv appears sceptical of the retreat. FRANCE 24's Ukraine correspondent Gulliver Cragg reports.

I don't think the Russians are retreating. They are advancing toward the borders and hoping before winter they will reach Moscow with complete limbs and still breathing....

One possibility is that the Russian military is leaving because they are confident that the local militia, Chechens, and others who are not actually part of the Russian army, can hold the city. While the Russian army itself just bombs the Ukrainians from far away. But they won't want to lose Kherson, or they'll never get it back.
