On Wednesday, November 9, 2022, the Russian defense minister announced a withdrawal of his country’s military to the left bank of the Dnieper river from Kherson, which could precipitate a full retreat from the city.

This news follows previous news of a civilian evacuation of the city earlier last month as well as rumors that the Russian military would fight for the city. Kherson is a strategically important city in the war and is vital for fresh water access to Crimea, and the Russian withdrawal means their military could fall to the east of the Dnieper river making future advances difficult.

It is worth noting that Ukrainian commenters have previously warned that Russia could be trying to set a trap for the Ukrainian military with a feint retreat from Kherson.

Kherson was the first major capture for Russia in the war, and is only one of two major cities captured with the other being Mariupol.

Secure the Ukrainian gains and with a smaller group continue to advance with the ability to retreat if necessary back into the strong position ! Then make another assault on the Russian positions ! If Russia is retreating from a very strategic city, I would assume it is tactical for something. Any general is not that stupid to retreat from such an important city without a plan.

It was strategic. If the dam or bridges were sabotaged, the Russian soldiers would've been cut off.
