As known admin told: If you hear jet plane launching sound from end of corridor, you can be sure that air conditioner in server room just died.

I had an old PowerEdge 2400 server (WIN2K vintage!) as part of a class project, and holy crap. That thing sounded like a damn 747 under my desk. Four case fans, a bank of SCSI HDDs, and two CPU fans all spinning away.

I’d love to have one of these plugged in in my room just to sit there and make noise

Nobody
Your mother talk to neighborhood: "my son can build a jet engine, in little scale"

Had one of these with 8 fans and they were removable, so obviously taking one out whilst running it try’s to compensate and it will literally put wind in your hair!

Sounds like an Airbus A310 with the GE CF6 engines.

I have 3 dell servers in my rack. When booting up and all 3 going off... Had to move a 42u from basement to garage because of the noise.

if you open the top cover there is a sensor named instrusion detector, that kick the fans at max cause by opening the cover, you just destroy airflow which is 1000% important in rack cooling . these machines need between 20-40ºC inlet air or they cannot dissipate the heat generated. so please dont power it up and open the cover, is like animal cruelty but with hardware xD

They idle at what, 6k RPM? pulling off that case probably jumped them to 11k RPM or somewhere close.

Was that Running Windows Server 2003 in 2011?

This is, how servers work, so what is the problem here?

@n3network1 check your fans, if one of them has failed or is not reporting rpm correctly it will run all the fans maxed, also if you have an older system with 3pin fans you cant actually control the speed :P

What do you use the server for? and what model is that?

Hah! I have a 9xxx series tower and it's way louder. Sadly, though, both of its PSUs died ;_;
