LAPD may no longer send armed officers to certain police calls

The union representing officers of the Los Angeles Police Department has released a list of calls for service that it believes can be handled by responders who are unarmed. Jennifer McGraw reports for the KTLA 5 News at 1 on March 1, 2023.

Non-violent calls? How can dispatch confirm that? What if it's an ambush?

Any ‘non-violent’ crime can easily turn into a ‘violent’ call. Sending in Law Enforcement without weapons could escalate into a LE’s death/injury as well as the subject’s injury/death. You don’t show up at a gun fight with a knife.

Wow…I see bad things with this program….no way I would show up to a call without a weapon. Things can turn violent quickly at any call!

Interesting. I wonder what caliber of people will apply for these unarmed but otherwise dangerous jobs and how many of them will need to be killed or injured before someone admits it doesn’t work?

You can respond without any firearms in the United Kingdom, but surely not in the USA, where literally every citizen bears a firearm. It can, as others have commented "turn easily into a violent call". Who knows how the situation can escalate or who is actually on scene. I wouldn't recommend that "regulation" or "policy".
