There is strong evidence that there have been at least two super novae in our local cloud. The evidence is two large swaths carved out of the local cloud. That suggests that we either travelled through a region at one point that contained active super novae, or we had some stars in our local group that went super nova in the past. There is some debate on whether those events could have caused some of our unexplained mass extinctions. We can't tell when it happened, we are just pretty sure it happened at least twice in the past. Who's to say an event like that couldn't trigger an explosion in diversity? After mass extinctions you almost always see a large explosion in diversity, so the two could have an underlying symmetry. We are constantly looking internal - maybe it was volcanoes, or maybe there was a sudden algae bloom, or maybe it was a change in climate. What about external forces? We don't live in a bubble - we live near very energetic bodies and there are millions of unseen gas clouds just waiting for us to traverse. As we near the spiral arm in the next few million years we will see even more situations like that.

Where are you giving credit to the folks who's footage you are using? You missed a couple edits...
