You missed Portugal losing its 3 colonies in india: Daman, Diu and Goa in 1961. These were the last colonies in india after independence. Also, what's special is that the Portuguese were the first colonial power to arrive in India in 1498 and also the last colonial power that left India in 1961. They were in India for around 463 years!!

I'm italian and I know the feeling of having a lot of prestige and then seeing it fading away as the majour countries like uk and france get stronger.

Fun fact: Italy and Portugal share the “liberation” day on the same date 25/04. Italian liberation happened in 1945 though.

In context of the Ultramar:
Not only the elite wanted to keep the colonies, but also the many Portuguese living there. I think about 300, 000~
Portugal treated the Retornados (treated as the “returnees” and not refugees) badly enough, that many of them went to Brazil or South Africa. At least, that’s what many I know experienced.
They lost pretty much everything, besides the clothes on their backs. Most of them were ordinary people and businessmen, living in the city.

Other than that, there are many other Portuguese in South Africa. I am unsure just how many are Madeirense but I think they are a majority of the Portuguese living here.

A great nation, with a mighty unfortunate last 400 years. Very resilient, hospitable, easy-going and friendly people.
