New ferry arrives ready to launch rival Isles of Scilly service

For more than 100 years travelling to the Isles of Scilly involved going on the Scillonian from Penzance to St Mary's and since the Sixties, there has also been the option of travelling by air, first by helicopter then by plane from 1984.

As travelling by helicopter or plane remains more expensive, most visitors and islanders go back and forth by sea. Until now passengers had to sail on board the Scillonian III. The sailing season is however limited from March to November after which the seas are too rough and dangerous for the boat to make the crossing safely.

The Scillonian III, which will be replaced by a new Scillonian IV from 2026, is operated by the Isles of Scilly Steamship Group (ISSG) which enjoyed a monopoly for many decades. That monopoly could be taking a serious hit now competition has arrived in the shape of a bright yellow and black catamaran operated by Scilly Ferries, a subsidiary of Belfast shipbuilder Harland & Wolff.

If not enough seats on deck I would prefer the traditional Scillonian. Who wants to look at scenery through windows!?

No mention of the cost of a return journey! Reckoned to be close to £100. Though it’s a bit quicker than the Scillonian it’s not much. Ferries in the Baltic and the Med are much quicker.

All gone before it even started . What a waste of resources. It's a crying shame . I was booked for a crossing in June then it was July then the end of August. I had to get my money back which wasn't a problem but some people had to get another way to cross at the last minute because of this . If I had the millions I would have liked to step in as this could have been a good earner.😢
